I recently put an ad in our local paper looking for a specific model JD. I had someone call me and said he had what I was looking for. I asked him to describe the tractor and what he was asking for it. Spent about 10 minutes on the phone with him and returned to the subject of "asking price" several times. He was reluctant to give me a price, but he suggested I come look at it and make an offer. So, I drive 45 miles to look at the tractor. Spent 15 minutes checking the tractor over and then asked "what are you asking for it?". Spent another 45 minutes talking to him and repeated the question three more times as to asking price. He would not say what he wanted for it. So, based on what I saw of the tractor and condition I told him what I was willing to offer. He quickly responded that he has decided to keep the tractor and not sell it(???) Do you think he was just "market price checking" or was his opinion of the value of his tractor much different than mine. A 90 mile, 3 hour lesson about getting the asking price on the phone.

There's a strong belief that the person who leads out with a price is the loser. Sounds like he's of that mindset. Sellers of this mindset are also usually deluded in that they believe everything they own is priceless.

Next time you get one of these guys on the phone, lead out with a very low offer and make them respond to it. Do it with a smile and you can usually get them to tell you what they are thinking.

You can't even go by a stated price anymore ! I went to go pick up a tractor advertised at $7500 OBO. I found out after I got there OBO in his mind ment or best offer over and in my mind and pretty much everyone else I deal with means they will take $7500 if offered but may have to settle for less if no one gives them that much. I would have been ok with that setup had he bothered to tell me in advance he was running an auction.

I have said "well, I don't want to price your stuff but I can tell you about some of the costs involved to restore tractors". This has broken the ice if said in a way that doesn't run down the mans equipment.

This guy wasn't from Dell Rapids, SD by chance was he. He has a whole shed full of tractors and parts for sale but won't tell you what he wants for them. It's always make an offer but it is never the right offer.

Thanks for the input guys. It was an awkward, weird conversation. Everytime I asked about selling price there was absolute silence for a good minute until I picked up the conversation again. Good thing it was only about a tractor, otherwise I might have got upset about it. As of now I just consider it was a waste of time and miles.

Next time you write your price on a piece of paper, he writes his price on another sheet and you swap sheets. Offer to split the difference. Both parties have the opportunity to walk.

Sounds to me like you were looking for a specific tractor and yo-yo thought he had found himself a sucker, plus he was also shopping to find out what it was worth.

I hear that all the time,I think money is tight
and they are afraid to price anything because
they might be to low or maybe there looking for
a sucker and hoping you'll offer more than they
want.A guy called the other night trying to sell
me a tractor and I went through the same thing,he
just kept saying "I'm listening" when I asked him
the price.I told him I can't buy and sell your tractor it's up to you to price it.Then he said
he would just haul it to an auction.

I usually explain that even if the seller wants an offer he has to have something in mind for me to even make an offer. In your case he was too quick with the "decided to keep". Probably price checking and not very considerate.

I think they hear that old tractors are gold and anyone wanting to buy one has alot money and they are looking to cash in. O never like that because I always get the feeling they are trying to feel me out and see how much they can get me for.
