My son's Second Annual Christmas Eve Bucket Ride Cancelled!

This is last year's

third party image

He even borrowed his uncle's hay rack all set up for hay rides to add to the festivities.

I've been smugly reading all these hard starting posts, but I guess Thursday's 0 temp was too much for the H and even the back up "new" Ford 641.

Guess planning on spring tuneups wasn't such a good idea after all! Maybe we need to drag that 39 JD B out and put her back together. No worry about 6 or 12 volt there.

I've certainly enjoyed all the great people here in YT land for the last couple months I've been hanging around. All my yakking about the folks in the tractor forum paid off. My daughter got me the Vintage Farm Tractors book.

And Cowman, my 2 year old grandaughter loves your book!

A very sincere Merry Christmas to all the folks here, all your families, and all our Service Men and Women!

I think it's normal to "get yer back up" when someone suggests that you're doing something stupid. I've been around the block a few times and I want to think I'm a marginally intelligent, prudent individual.
However, these posts can't always cover the whole story and I will listen to any risk assessment anybody wants to put on the table. The good thing about this country and these forums is that we can see a lot of comments - both pro and con - and ulitmately make our own decisions on the reasonableness of the feedback. As a parent, I've been pretty outspoken myself to this particular 26 year old who isn't exactly risk adverse. The good news is that over the past year, AFTER last year's bucket ride, he commented how that had really been a potentially dangerous thing to do, and it scared him a little thinking about what might have happened. It's his show, not mine, and he made it a point to get the hayrack this year, and I am proud of him!

We should never blindly reject a comment from someone who is trying to save a life.

Merry Christmas and may you all have a prosperous and safe New Year!

That cold snap may be the way a higher power stepped in to prevent loss of life or injury from marring your joyous celebration. Riding in the bucket of ANYTHING is highly dangerous and a no-no on my spread. Ed

The bucket ride might be OK if the tractor is used only in reverse. If you insist on the ride while driving forward, it would be better if it was during a slow race.

Some may think your comment a bit "over cautious" but I'm glad you mentioned it. A young girl was killed up in these parts this fall while riding in a bucket with her brother driving the tractor, they were doing regular farm chores.

Son had grandkids momma's side of the family out there today. Don't know whether he tried again or not.
H started well last winter and I had gone through the wiring this spring and I was optimistic even with a pretty tired battery. Probably should have jumped that and it might have gone. Son kinda wanted to get the Ford going and was focusing on that. It would just pop and flood right away. Guess I should have picked up those new plugs last week. Oh Well.
Cowman, that 2 year old grandaughter has a 3 month old lil brother that's gonna need a new book in a year or so. Hope those new pistons go easy on ya so ya have some spare time to write some more.

Mine aint startin' either in reply to Dave (IL), 12-25-2004 20:10:11
Diesel is my fault for sure, didn't put any anti-gel in the tank when was warm. And the gas is an old Allis, and think setting out gets moisture in the mag. Dang Amish guys were supposed to start gettin' the new barn up weeks ago, now temps have been down in the single + or - digits. They do excellent work, just don't set any speed records gettin' started. That diesel aint movin' till gets started cause the bucket and back blade are on the ground - aint pullin' it nowhere. Well, are predicting in the 30's or 40's this coming week, so when I get home next weekend, will have another go round. Need that barn up so can do some maintenance.

If its not too cold for a sleigh ride (if there was enough snow) than its not too cold for a tractor ride. My kids love a bucket ride, great idea. I got a block heater on all my machine's (thanks to Hugh) and it works wonders.

Merry Christmas all.

If it's too cold for tractors to start it's too cold to ride! Have fun, hope for warmer weather, It was real nice here today and I worked out in the yard in a light jacket, pulled pistons out of a Farmall.

Did you try using a 12 volt battery to start your tractors?, spins the engine over a whole lot faster and doesn't hurt anything unless the lights are on, and in that case, 12 volts pops the 6 volt bulbs. I also found using a higher grade of gasoline helps ease starting in the winter. You've got people counting on ya!
