I have a brand new tecumseh 6.5 horse power sport model OHH65 spec 71712D and would like to adjust carb and can*t find a fuel or air mixture screw on carb **** Am I not looking good enough or isn*t there one there *** Just built a wood splitter and put this on for power *** The motor works fine but it took about 1.5 gallons of gas to split about half cord of wood and smokes very very black if governor kicks in a little or a lot* I got a 13.6 gpm pump and a 4 inch cyl. if that means anything ** Thanks Much Hope you all have a good year Dennis

The piece inside the air cleaner that you changed is the cold weather baffle for winter snow blower type of use. Gene Davis

Get ya a Briggs and you won't have a problem! Personally I wouldn't have a Tecumseh engine unless absolutly necessary. Not meaning to burst any bubble or anything. Just my personal preferance. I know there people who swear by Tecumseh and trash Briggs. With the new motors out there, I would find me a good old engine, overhaul it and have a workhorse!

I have the 9HP Tecumseh engine had same problem took carb off the engine took it apart and cleaned it there are no adjustments on it that I could see after I did that I put a fuel filter in the line from tank to carb and now it runs just fine. You may want to take carb off there is just a float and pin and the needle and seat.
regards
rod

If it was bought through a dealer, let him take care of it. A brand-new engines should run right.

New engines meeting EPA standards tend to hide adjustment screws under plugs/caps or do not have adjustable jets- must disassemble and replace jets with next smaller size to lean mixture. You will probably have to check shop manual and parts manual blowup of carburator to see what adjustment is possible. If you're lucky you may just have to take off float bowl to access hidden jet/needle assembly that formerly was poking through bottom of bowl on Tecumseh.

Yes, such adjustment is now deemed beyond mortals.

Online "Operator's Manual" says don't touch - take to dealer.

Operator's Manual also mentions anti-icing baffle under air cleaner cover. That would affect mixture.

Yes Dave only the dealer can do this. The adjustment screw is the secret A head design known only to special technicians and TV sitcoms.I hear one must recite a magic poem to get the screwdriver into the secret A head slot just to start adjusting the thing. This is after years of training.Backyard mechanics such as ourselves should never attemp this complicated procedure[WE might make it too rich killing thousands of innocent citizens.]
