I just paid good money for a service manual for my Cat D2. I could not wait to get it in the mail. Boy was I disappointed. the most you get out of it is how to yank the whole motor or transmission or treads. I wanted to know how and in what sequence to remove the head in order to unstick the pistons. I guess I will have to just wing it?

Did you try Midland Press for Serviceman's Reference Books and Parts Catalogs, which are 2 essential manuals for a Caterpillar tractor, and are nicely re-printed under license of Cat. Also, there most likely is a Serviceman's reference book specific to the engine model, as it may have been used in other applications, such as a genset, compressor, crane, or marine application etc. As an example, for my D-7, which has a D8800 series engine, there is a book specific to the engine, becuase of its other applications, seems to be some better detail in the engine manual.

I'm waiting on mine - been stuck in the mail for 6 weeks now! Which one did you get?
