The needle doesn't even jump when cranking. Tear the heads off and start over? Or is there a common mistake(s) made when replacing the head gaskets on these trucks? Thanks for all the suggestions by everyone. My brother has leave the 18th, 2 weeks left to fix it. Thanks again.

Knauff,

Put the gauge back in the toolbox; it's leading you down the wrong road.

It only takes 1 in of vacumn to start a gas engine and none to start a diesel.

Missed the history but a common mistake is to do a vacuum test and forget to have the throttle held wide open. Or hook the gauge up to a non-manifold source. Or forget to have the plugs in.

Maybe if you went though this again we could be more helpful.
