Hmmmm,

My 966 "restore to new" project just crossed the darned $9500 mark this morning. :>(

Geeeze! This thing has got to be getting close to the finish line before too much longer or else I'm gonna have to get a "cost overrun" advance from the management of the house. :>)

Signed,

Mornin' John,

She still looks pretty sad, but we're making some headway as the biggest part of the repairs have been done.

Still have to pressure it up to find a hydraulic leak under the seat then it can go up on the jack stands. The brakes will get overhauled at that time and then it should be about ready for some paint.

Allan,

Coming along nicely. Your numbers are interesting. Couple of weeks ago there was a bashing party (ttalk) for the guy that bought a JD 3020 for $20k (including this guy who payed $17 for a full up 4230). Seems that number is not so rediculous after all when you look at what you have spent, haven't finished and (in his case) haven't added labor and profit for a resale.

Don't know about you, but after I put all that "toil" into a project, I can't sell it. Too much of me in it. Dunno how these guys that restore for a living do it. Guess they have to do something to eat.

Mark

In my opinion, any money that I could divert from the "horse fund" to the "tractor fund" is just like money saved. I'd rather have $10,000 red tractors sitting in the shed than hay-burners standing in the pasture any day. Since I just came in from thawing out the horse waterer (darn nice weather drove the frost down), I may have a touch of bias in my thoughts.
So don't worry about over spending on a tractor...just consider it as not being able to afford one more horse some day...and that's a positive thing!

Hi Allen '' So where is the limit on these things before you get way too deep in doodo that you can't recover. I heard that the 1066's and the like have gone up roughly 30 percent in the last two years. That would be for a running restorable one that needs maybe 1500 bucks invested and a fresh set of clothes. I assume your gonna doll it all up when the wrenching is done? Migraine

Hi Migraine,

I'd like to keep it at around $10K if at all possible, but I might be foolin' myself just a little.

My trouble is, I'm just too darned picky. I want 'em like they were when they were new. Just a grumpy ol' man, I guess.

Gotta ask ya: Was the linkage reversed on your T/A bellcrank?

Allen, does that 10k include the initial cost of the tractor or what you have added value to it? I know the dealers are asking a tidy sum for anything that looks decent. They have 666 Hydro here all painted up with good rubber and no loader and they are asking 12k. Not a chance at that price but I'll bet they get 10 or so. Old run down 66 series bring 6-8 thousand. I guess they just look at proportion to new which is going absurd every time you look away for a minute. No my 966 has still got a serious cramp in the TA system. We were going to start splitting tonight but nobody available to help. Loaded up the brakes on Sat. morn in both sides of TA and seems to be strong in both settings, just that the thing works in reverse. Nobody can figure this thing out. I will report the results of the autopsy as soon as i get the results. Migraine

Hi Guy,

I was hoping to keep the total salvage price, the cost of repairs and the clean up under the $10K price, but I'm probably foolin' myself 'cause one always runs into more little boo-boos that a guy hasn't counted on.

At the onset, with it having the 4 'almost new' filled tires, all that was apparently wrong was the leaking engine liner, a loose front end pin/bushings, a weeping clutch assist cylinder and with the tractor having 4006 total hours, I thought it was worth the $3500 salvage price and that I could get it back to form with another $6K.

The local dealer here wants $10K for tired old tractors having upwards of 10,000 hours and I wouldn't know what I had, so I just think I can get a better bang for the buck by fixin' this old heifer up.

I dunno, this game is an expensive undertaking any way you look at it.

Pocket change?

That is three year's worth of wages for me. I live way out here in the boonies.

We don't have telephones, electricity or running water. No newspapers; all news travels by word of mouth.

I hate to be the one to tell you this Allan, but Truman won so we're stuck with him for a while. He's already talking about reimposing wage and price controls which I'm not for but that might help hold your costs down. Has any one seen Eleanor Roosevelt lately?

Yes Sir, I will.

But I told the shop to put me at the back of the line as far as getting it done.

The fellows who have cattle to feed and their tractors are broke down are far more important than my little "fixer upper" project.

Although, it is nice to have 'er paid for, even tho I don't have the tractor yet.

Go figure; I've pumped all this money in this old gizmo and haven't even heard it run yet. Is that crazy or what? :>(

Dang Allen, $10,000 tractors, a dude ranch, I"d be broke by that time. I see another horse coming so you can get more tractor funds.
Just spend it an enjoy it.

Hang in there Allan, I think you are still going to come in under book value considering the condition it will be in when done. I recieved the latest facts report in an e-mail just recently. This is information gathered from dealers, auctioneers, etc. The prices being paid for used machinery in good condition will totally make your head swim. I sure am glad that I am not trying to get started right now.

Allan, you might want to reflect upon the fact that you"re rapidly approaching "GREEN" price levels, without the full benifits of "GREEN" results. I"ve got a line on a real clean 4240....

....Only because I"m a friend would I make this gesture! John

Good lands buddy. DO NOT put those J. D. batterys in that 966 tractor. It would probably run, but it would sound like it had only two cylinders. Then you'll be on here trying to find out why it sounds like an Essex Tri Directional or something. Just a word of caution, Harley

Indy, from the auction results I have seen recently, I would say the playing field is being leveled very quickly. It doesn't seem to make any differance what color it is. The key word seems to be "condition". That means there is somewhat of a demand even for the green tractors.
Sorry, I couldn't resist, just sticking up for my buddy Alan.

Yeah, You "Binderoids" stick together like white on rice don't you???? Sorta "Honor among thieves" type thing, huh?

Everything old but in good shape is going UP in value. With new prices being what they are, and those 60's, 70's, and 80's tractors being just as good, if not better that the new stuff anyway, they're like sitting on a stack of $$$$$$$$! (But just notice what COLOR money is the next time you have your hands on some!)

I think you're right.

While I was in there this morning, writing what I hope was the "last" check, I asked about this 806 with a DuAll loader that was parked on his lot two weeks ago.

He told me that I must have driven by just at the right time, because the tractor did not set on the lot for two hours before it sold.

I think people are starting to see that these implement dealers are talkin' out of a "cocked hat" when it comes to new tractors. :>)
