Another thing to REMEMBER... be aware of the guy who tries to get a "cheap" job done, telling you he's not that fussy or is going to only sell it or just wants to get the winter out of it, etc., etc. HE'S the guy who'll be back ranting and roaring when the first little blister of rust peeps out trying to get it done again for nothing and/or telling anyone who'll listen what crappy work you do, even though he got what he asked and paid for. If I sound bitter, it's because I am...

Dave, I agree with some of the others. I have been doing body work and painting for about12 years now. I have found that people that realize the costs associated with painting are willing payers. But people that have no clue look at you like your crazy when you tell them just what it will cost for paint, primers, reducers, and so forth. Then you still have to add your labor costs to all of that. I have changed the scope of work that I will do now. I only paint tractors now, and unlike others, I try to stick to people I know, and make them buy everything, and pay me a small labor charge. Charging $20 per hour for any metal work and $10 an hour for body work and painting seems to please everyone involved. Just my thoughts about it.

Sure give a good deal but your electricity and time is worth more than ten bucks an hour.Dont forget painting can affect your health.Charge them or let them drive rusty relics. Some people interpet a good deal as a cheap job and they like to pay more.Makes them feel better. After all if the customer supplies material your only profit is labor.

Get half the money up front . Being screwed out of the other half is better than it all . Avoid doing it for friends & relatives . with all these money grabbing lawyers & the love of sueing ; I'd be very causous . The only one that really wins in lawsuits are the dirty lawyers . I've been there a few times trying to collect . Good luck . Ken

Stay away....stay far away. I spent 15 years in the body shop trade(racket) and still know a few guys at it now. It's a dirty and unhealthy way to make a living. You'll always feel like you never charged enough and the customers will always feel like you ripped 'em off. I've had guys walk away from me for quoting them say $600 to paint a car only to find out that they finally went and paid twice that after they shopped around and made enemies everywhere and were too sheepish to come back. It's fun and rewarding to do it for yourself but the that'll go right out the window once you go "into business".

I"m a current painter and I agree with JeffC.The joy of making something ugly look pretty will go out the window when you go into business. My advise is paint 5 then go out and get your business license.

I think you will do OK if, right up front, you say you are painting to protect the metal and not for aesthetics. Once someone thinks that they are going to see their face in the rust-pitted hood of a fifty year old tractor once it is painted, you are in trouble. (And, please, properly mask off tires -- I just hate to see overspray on tires.)

YES - You are getting overwhelmed because you are giving it away. I have a truck I need painted, and would love to find someone like you around here.

You're wearing out your tools, compressors, etc. I wouldn't try to compete with the body shops for their business. There is plenty of work for someone as yourself, from people that don't want to pay body shop rates for absolute perfection.

And being this would be extra money for you, I also wouldn't take on any work from someone you think might pick everything apart, or someone you just don't like!

It sure wouldn't hurt to have a source of income unrelated to your farming. Just be sure that you set the fees high enough that you will actually turn a profit. You can't do it for free, even for your best friend.
