I have pulled 5-14 with a JD 830 which has similar bhp with no problems. I also pulled 5-16 in hard soil and it was quite a load. To get it to work, we had to put on seven sets of wheel weights. Really too much load in that soil. I have pulled both an 18ft and 21ft disc. The 21 ft would be way too much in plowed ground, but was marginally ok when discing stalks. The 18 ft was a better fit. An 18 ft disc is just "OK" in plowed ground, a 16 ft would be perfect. I have a 14 ft JD BWA disc and it was too small, matches a lot better with my JD 730.

706: Allow 15 to 20 hp per plow bottom and 1.25 to 1.5 hp per blade on a disk. Soils will make a big difference. Clay to clay loams will require the higher hp with sandy loams take the low figure. This is just a rough guide.

Your general rule of 15-20 hp? Is that the engine HP or would that be the tractor's rating on the PTO / or drawlbar? I want to pull a 3 bt trip plow & have heard of the 15 rule.I'm looking at 45-60 pto hp tractors, rocky&clay soil? Am I looking in the right direction?

Ricey: That rule is quite general in maybe the broadest of terms. My thoughts would be drawbar hp just to be on the safe side.

If your going to be plowing in rocky clay soil those rocks embeded in clay don't move quite as easily as rock in sandy loam. Over the years, I have found that plowing in rock and stone, your dollars in, if you keep your speed at or below 3.5 mph. Yes trip beam is supposed to protect the plow, but you can still experience damage. I've seen bottoms not trip when they should have.

If your wanting to do 3 - 14 or 16 I'd go with a tractor over 45 drawbar hp. Get a manual for those trip beams, and learn how to manually trip them just before plowing each season. If your plow sits for basically 11.5 months rust can play a factor in that trip mechanism. Have a good time plowing, it is an enjoyable experience.

Yes! I am so glad to see someone else believes that one doesn't need to plow in road gear. Consistant with what I said on a related post, I would prefer to encounter a rock at 3.0-3.5 mph rather than at 5.0-5.5 or plus mph.
