My brother is working on a friend's 3 cylinder Geo Metro. It starts good when cold, but as soon as it comes off of fast idle it looses spark to number 1 cylinder. He has replaced the distributor, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and the "brain box" w/o any change in behavior. When it is warm and looses spark to number one cylinder it can be regained by advancing the distributor to about 15 degrees BTDC. It will run good for several minutes and then lose spark again. Anyone have experience with these little engines???? Thanks!

Does the distributor have conventional points or a hall effect sensor and a shutter wheel? If it is a shutter wheel is the wheel in good condition without any bent shutters? Does it move radially and wobble in the shaft bushings? Hall effect sensor may work cold but not hot due to proximity of the shutter to the sensor. Some are easy to replace while others require removal of the distributor shaft.

What do you see if you connect an inductive timing light to the #1 plug wire when it quits firing ? Does the timing light still flash ? It would be pretty odd if the timing for that one cylinder was drifting by 15 degrees. Does each spark plug have it's own coil ? How is the compression ?

Riverbend...when it quits firing (with an inductive timing light on #1 spark plug wire) there is no spark/no light. You can bring the spark back by rotating the distributor to greatly advance the spark. There is only one coil for all three cylinders and compression is ~150 psi.

You did not indicate that he had replaced the plugs. Seems like that would be the first thing to try.

Hi Emerald,

I have found that the new engines are very sensitive to clean battery connections. About 3mths is all I can go without cleaning the connections.

That would lead me to agree with Lucass that your loosing a ground somehwere. To prove this install a temperory ground jumper on that plug. If it improves, start looking at all wiring grounds.

It could have a different ground path while on high idle than it does on normal idle.

as a starter , be sure its holdin good battery voltage when the idle drops. lucas
