Banjo hydraulic fittings, used on vintage tractors

I am trying add some hydraulics to a contemporary JD790, but have discovered that the 3/4" (SAE-8) banjo hydraulic fitting ends it uses are not readily available anywhere in the US. I wondered if these fittings were common on any of the older tractors? Is there a vintage source I could be looking for that might have these?

I can buy complete hydraulic lines from JD to get the fittings and un-braze them, but the cheapest line works out to about $40 a fitting.

If I really have to, I can fabricate these, but I was hoping to find a source to save that work.

Any thoughts?

You might try looking on the Thomas Register site. I just did a search for hydraulic fittings and it turned up 1444 different listings. You might try it and narrow things down little or just do a different search and come up with some other places too. Either way one of them should either have what you need or can tell you who does. Good luck, don't give up.

Just a stupid question, maybe; but why don"t you use a male SAE-8 fitting/adapter and go to a 90 degree fitting, forget the banjo fitting.

I think the banjo fitting you speak of is the kind that is used on some fuel systems? with a hollow bolt that screws through a block?

Tom, it's a long shot, but try Motion Industries
www.motionmro.com
They have locations all over and they helped me
with some ancient fittings.

I don't know what you are trying to hook up ? But your John Deere dealer should be able to get you an auxilary hydraulic coupler kit to fit that model as it is still a current production model. It sounds like you are trying to tap into the wrong place.

Mike M,

I understand why you would say that, but I am just trying to get a braze-on banjo fitting with which to build some custom lines for adding hydraulics. The factory does have a $300+ kit that doesn't do at all what I want. I would get a total of two useful fittings out of it. I could buy one of the hard lines that has one of these fittings on each end for about $80, but that's still $40 for each fitting which just seems a bit high to me for banjos.

You cannot buy these fittings themselves anywhere that I have found in the entire US and I really have looked. I source parts commercially on a global basis for a living and believe me they are just not readily available. I found one place in India and they are taking forever to communicate with me, probably because I am asking about small volume.

I just thought that if some older tractor used these too, I might find a salvage yard that might have some, or some other source for vintage parts. It tends to be a "mature" technology.

I still think you will be farther ahead with the factory setup to get aux. hyd. to run a backhoe etc. But if you must tap in somewhere else and want to use a banjo then I would chuck some steel up in a lathe and make some.If you don't have a lathe I'm sure someone around you has a small shop that can make some. Good luck with your project.

MikeM,

Well, I really don't see how. I am connecting at teh same ports they provide with the power-beyond kit, but I can't use the lines they provide because they don't connect to the valve I'm adding. For more than $300 all I would get literally is two banjo fittings that I could unbraze and braze to new lines. To me that's not a good deal.

I thought they had a line that went to quick couplers on the back that you could hook your own hoses to ? Anyhow I would have some made at a local machine shop.

Checked my supplier this morning and only fitting available through Weatherhead is a fitting that will crimp on 3/8" inside diameter two wire hose. The actual fitting is 7/8" square with a 5/8" hole and a seat for a 3/4" o-ring on both sides. I make hoses in my shop and will gladly custom make a hose for you if these fittings would work.

Mike from KS,

Thanks, but no that won't help. These are for SAE-8 (3/4" x 16tpi) ports. They have to have a 3/4" hole through the banjo head. Square is not a problem, and an O-ring seat would be great. I've even thought about getting a hose fitting and drilling out the hose barb to braze on tubing (some have a large diameter boss at the banjo body that could be drilled out). But regardless, a 5/8" hole isn't going to help.

It was suggested to me that older vintage tractors might have used these fittings more, and that seemed like worth a shot, but maybe not...

Thanks much!
