Hi, We are looking at a Ford 3000 gas tractor for my son who is in the Navy, he has a 100 acre farm and we are looking for a general farm tractor to cut CRP ground (6ft brush hog?)and use a cultivator and small plow. Found a real clean 3000 gas tractor for $5600, is this a fair price? It has a Ford front endloader, all in great condition. Is this enough tractor to do the work we want? Fair Price? What horsepower is this? new at this and dont want to spend sons money Wrong

I have two gas 3000s, one with a loader. They are good tractors. Your price would be very good here in Wisconsin if it has live PTO.
The 3000s did come with several transmissions. - The 4 speeds and the six speeds had transmission PTOs - not the best for mowing. The 8 speeds with the two stage clutch had live PTO - the best deal. ( I have heard that there could be 8 speeds with single stage clutch thus transmission PTOs but haven't seen one ) There are also the SOS transmissions that do have independent PTO but have their own drawbacks. Know what you are getting.

I owned a 1973 3000. It was the first tractor I ever bought. (In 1977) It was a gasser. Good little tractor. I believe they were rated at around 42 HP. I used it hard, and never had any real complaints. I traded up to a 5000 after a couple years.

Gas engines tend to start easier in cold weather. There are ways to overcome that "problem" with diesels.

I would say in todays market, at least around here, a 3000 Ford would snatch about $4000 to $4500, plus another $1500 for a good loader. Sounds like a fair deal... Not cheap, but not too far out of line either.

A bigger tractor would be usefull on 100 acres, but bigger USUALLY means more expensive.

I have 100 acres also (Nebraska). I have an 8n to use for mowing, blading, etc. I also have an IH 460 to do loader, PHD, and other "heavier work". It all depends on what the 100 acres are - mine is mostly pasture and timber - what I need to plow the 8n does. I want to trade the 460 for something that is easier to get onto (bad knees, arthur) and was looking at a 3000 or 4000 series. I prefer a gasser (diesel messes with my siniuses), and around here, Gas $2.03 Diesel $2.35. Even in Summer, Diesel is usually more expensive locally.

Price sounds OK. Personally, I would go for a diesel. When you start talking about 100 ac of anything, that's quite a bit of work for a small tractor. You will also burn considerably more gas than diesel, and at a higher price than diesel. Gassers are fine for poking around, but they had their day. I don't know about anyone else, but I can't afford to run them anymore. I'd keep looking for a diesel 3000, 4000, or even a 5000 with an 8 speed. Take care.

I have a 1974 gas 3000 with a loader. It is a great tractor. Easy on gas. Will do everything you want it to do. If its in good condition and not alot of hrs (over 4000) its a good price here in Michigan.

I agree. Here in central PA, the tractor alone will go for close to that price. I paid more for my "73 with a Woods loader. The loader isn"t as heavy as a Ford loader and it comes off easily if you don"t want it attached when mowing. Don"t overload the loader because the front axle isn"t as robust as the 4000 and larger models.

The 3000 gas is 33.21 drawbar HP and 37.8 PTO HP, 158 CID engine, 8F-2R trany or SOS 10R-2R, 3664 pounds without loader-ballast.

Try to avoid Select-O-Speed transmission; Diesel would be a better choice with its 175 CID engine.

If all in good condition, the price is right but not a bargain.
I would definitively prefer Diesel and 8-2 tranny.
Good luck
