Guys, Looking at GMC (can't stand the Oriental-looking Chevy front ends) 3/4 ton,4X4s.Any experience or opinions about the 6.0 and the 8.1.One of our work trucks has the 6.0-plenty of power but I've been told it's a thirsty rascal.Bosses nephew has a crew cab,4X4 with the 8.1,auto and 3.73,and he's claiming 13 mpg.He said it's the about the same as the 6.0,so he figured go for the power. What are you all getting? Thanks

Wife"s 2004 Chevy 4x4 crewcab; 8.1 Allison gets 9.5 mpg towing 18,000# load at 70MPH. Did that on a 1500 mile trip to NY last summer. 12.5 MPG as a daily driver. The 8.1 and the Allison is a great combination. You don"t always need the power but it is there if you do.

I have a 2500 Avalanche with the 8.1 engine. The rig has a title weight of 6600 lbs. I write down every gallon of fuel, and last year the average mpg came out to 10.8 overall. That's up and down the road, pulling trailers, driving around town every day, etc. No...it doesn't use any oil either.
My 2500 pickup with a 6.0 will maybe get an average of 1 to 2 more mpg overall. And there's a remarkable difference in power. That 8.1 feels like a big electric motor under the hood...it just pulls without balking.

Had a 2001 2500HD Regular cab 4x4 with 6.0 liter and 4.10 gears. Got 14.5 at best. Got 8-9 pulling loaded gooseneck with 12,000 on trailer. I guess it done alright pulling the load, but you know how it is, always want more. Traded it for a 2003 2500HD Ext. cab 4x4 with 8.1, Allison, 3.73 gears. It gets 14 at best, 9-10 pulling same trailer and load, but does it so much easier. Neither used a drop of oil and I bought both new. Used to be a diesel user, but too much money up front and diesel fuel too high. I love this 8.1 and Allison combination and do not intend to go back to diesel power.

2002 chevy 2500HD 4x4 longbed Extended cab. 6.0L with the automatic. 13 to 14 mpg empty, loaded, trailer, etc. Does better on highway regardless of load status. Like it very much.

I have the 6.0 but its in a 2 wheel drive with a 4.10 gear and on the road it gets about 16.5 to 17 mpg and about 14 pulling a trailer (Not loaded to heavy) on a good day.

No way would I buy a vehicle with the 8.1. I drove a 3/4 ton 2WD Suburban with the 8.1 and it never got over 12 mpg. This engine (new) burned a quart of oil every 2K miles. Stick with the smaller V-8s or a Duramax Diesel.

MarkB, That's what I'm getting at.If I'm only going to get 13 or so with the 6.0,no real lose if the 8.1 gets 12 mpg. It's a tradeoff I can live with ,for the difference in oomph. The oil consumption has me concerned. The Duramax is just too much $$$ upfront for me.If I was driving 50,000 miles per year, yes.Plus,if I need to haul REALLY heavy stuff,I'd borrow my brother's PSD ( like I do now-heck,they're his trailers,I might as well use his truck).Anyway, thanks to all,and keep 'em coming.Lyle

Have you looked at Dodge's new "Contractor's Special" pickup, or whatever they call that thing? Gotta get great milage. Is a gas/battery hybrid, that is marketed to double as the most Dewalt, Makita, Skill power providing environmental sensitive battery on wheels ever unleashed at a beer drinking, cigar smoking, sledge hammer toting men's world kind've truck. Of course, won't see any commercials on TV of it pulling it's big brother locomotive.

Bet Tool Time Tim would never buy one of them. Uhh Uhh Uhh Uhh Uhh. Me niether, unless can get it to sound like a locomotive - now if could do that... LOL.

Happy easter, Mark

2003 6.0L in a HD. 1/2 ton Crew Cab 4x4. 12.5 US mpg lifetime average on 87 tractor gas. Trailer towing, trips and wife hauling kids into town for music lessons. Plenty of power. Even more if the torque limiter is deactivated from the engine management system. Shift kit in trans advised if re-programming the ecm..

2001, 3500 4X4, 8.1, 6 spd manual, 4.11 rear. About 10-11 mpg, loaded, empty, with trailer or without. Lowest mpg was 8 heavily loaded through the Rockies. Highest about 14.
