I drove a 9N as a boy and am now looking to buy a 8N that is for sales in the area. Question...do all 8Ns only allow the lift to work when the PTO is activated? Question ...it runs good is $3000.00 a good price

You're getting some good advice here but I recommend going over to the 9N,2N,8N board. That's where the real experts are. There's a guy named Zane over there that will sell you a position control for, as I recall, less than $100. I believe he's also invented something to give you live pto/hyd. There's another guy named Dell who really knows the electrical end of them, etc. They were great little tractors and we admired them for what they were but never bought because they were simply too light to be hooking on to heavy wagonloads on moderatly hilly terrain. I wouldn't for example, plan on hooking one to a baler with a wagon behind it, not a safe thing to do. They would not pull two plows in heavy red clay, etc. That pretty well relegated them to lawn & garden duty and that was unthinkable in those days.

The PTO is not live but it does not have to be on for hydraulics to work. I have used one for thousands of hours and if you do not need live hydraulics and pto this is a fine inexpensive tractor. Price depends on condition. This should be in fair to good condition.

What functions do you intend for the tractor to perform? Just remember that this is an older tractor that doesn't have modern more convenient features such as the live hydraulics and live PTO.

If you don't need a modern workhorse then by all means a Ford purchase will leave you with a wonderful little FUN machine.

If you will ever want to operate a roto-tiller, install a loader, or need front wheel assist, I'd opt for a later but albeit more expensive tractor.

Just in case you want to look at another one go to the "photo ads" and search 98181. It is not far from you in Argyle. I am in Princeton and have a friend who also lives in Argyle that has a very nice 9N he has talked about selling if you would want me to check. My email is open if you want more information.

An 8N doesn't have live hyds. So yes the pto has to be on for the 3 point to work. $3000 is a little much for an 8N unless it has new or almost new tires, and a good paint job. Most of the ones I see go for around $1500-2500. Also is it a side dist. or a front? Side mount dist. are worth a little more.

Thank you gentlemen for the information...I already feel like a part of a great group of tractor owners. It has been years since my father, brother and I rebuilt a NAA in the garage of our home in Plano Texas and took it to the farm. It was one tough tractor...I hope this 8N can be purchased reasonably and put into service.

Thank you for your information. I do not remember the distributor configuration .He told me it was a 1952 model...does that help? The tractor has new tires and IS IN GREAT CONDITION.

A 1952 should have a side distributor and a proofmeter (tachometer/hour meter combination). It was the last year of 8N production. You might want to do some research on the site linked below. Be sure to read through the "Identify N series Fords" and also take a look at the FAQ's, especially the one on buying an 8N. Lots of good tips there.

52 was last year of the 8N and should have the side distributor.Late 8Ns had slightly different gearing and are favored slightly over older ones.Only way to know actual year for sure is the serial no(if original engine block)stamped(not cast)on a flat on mid left side of engine. For 1952 number should be above 8N 442035.
