I know this will probably start a war and I'll be the villian, but I really would like some comparitive information. At my job we use a bunch of small 25-50 hp diesels. These are 2 and 4 cylinder liquid cooled engines used for severe duty golf course mowing. The majority of them are Kubota engines. What I would like to know is how do you people rate them as for brand quality with the same API specs. Things like consumption problems, excessively expensive prices, etc. This will be for mineral oils, NOT SYNTHETICS. Will cross that bridge later on. Will mostly be 15W-40 wt oil. Would like to hear some opinions of actual users, and their experiences.I am not trying to start any brand war, just soliciting actual use experiences and opinion so we can look at it objectively. At the present we are using Chevron Delo 400, but looking at Shell Rotella, or possibly Citgo. Thanks. Gene Davis

Opinions are like belly buttons;everybody's got one.
As long as you use the right API classification and you follow the engine/vehicle manufacturers recommendation for oil changes, my experience has been no oil related problems with either spark ignition or diesel engines. Having said that, I use chevron Delo 400 15W40 in all my diesel equipment and Chevron 10W40 or 5w30 in all my spark ignition engines because I get a good deal on it at Costco.

This subject always amazes me, and I tend to avoid them at all costs, however this time I will pipe in just a bit.

It never fails to amaze me to see the people that will spend extra on a specific kind of wax (because they can see the difference), but will try a save a few cents on lubricants. Your lube is cheap in comparisson to the investment in your equipment.

A while back, on one of these forums, someone asked about paint. They didn't see the need to pay extra for paint when Tractor Supply's paint turned out the same color and was cheaper. It was a general concensus that TSCs paint was mediocre at best. You know why? Because after time, YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE. So why would a person think that TSC, Walmart, etc., is going to take on the extra expense of putting out a high quality oil when it's known they put out a lesser quality paint for reasons of the ulmighty dollar? Yes, their oil will work just as well at first, but after time, it will show up. Perhaps not while you own the equipment, but it will.

Stick with a major. Their oils are higher priced for a reason. They have stuck the money into research and development. Their profits are tied to putting out a quality oil. Walmart doesn't care if they get a bad rap on their oil, they have 64,000 other products to make money at.

BUT why spend the extra bucks for name brand oil when someone else bottles the same exact oil as the name brand.Like batteries, I worked for a battery manufacturer when I was a little younger, same place made the same battery for several differnt people, one was cheaper because of the name on the side.OIL is no different,in some cases.

Mobil may package for Walmart, for example, but I guarantee it is not of the same quality. It is a bid issue. Look at Fleetguard filters, they are made under several names, but not all of the same quality.

Well, Iused to run the Rotella in just about everything I own.It was rocommneded to me by some one on a truck forum to try the plain ole WalMart15-40 in my truck and i havent looked back since.Blackstone labs give me an extrememly good report each time I send it in.Last oil change on my truck had 9000 miles on it.That last report said 9000 was a tad too much on the contaminents so Ill go 8500 and see what it looks like then. This is on a stock 01 7.3 Powerstroke.Best part is,the Wally world oil is bottled by several different big name manufactureres depending on the grade and type of oil.The 15-40 is bottled by I believe it was Valvoline, but nowhere near the price.

Based on my experience; not a chemist; my choices for non-synthetic:
1st - Mobil Delvac 1300 15W40
2nd - Shell Rotella 15w40
3rd - Chevron Delo 15w40
Only choice for synthetic:
Mobil Delvac One 5W40

I currently use Mobil 1300 Super 15W-40. I tried John Deere Plus 50 but oil consumption was higher, so went back to Mobil. I've also used Mobil's synthetic, Delvac 1, but is pretty expensive but good.

Not to long ago I ran into a question like yours on a truck forum. It started a war. I heard good and bad things about every oil that is out there, until one person said the only way to found out what is the best oil to use, you need to use the different types of oil and figure out which one out performs the other. So what i would do is, put a different oil brand in each engine at the same time, when it is time to service the engine compare the different brand and choose which one to use in all the engines. That is what i did.

I'm a long way from a petrochemist, just have some observations. Naturally tainted with my own biases and experience. I was a Quaker State man, HDX 30 (late FCI 30 after the Pennsoil merger). Only new engine I was ever in that started on Quaker State was a 256 cid Ford. Opened the valve cover at 3000 hrs and it was a clean as a new one (2x per year oil change, about 200 hrs). Switched to Shell Rotella 15w 40 in '01. Used it in a new engine and then was in the engine at about 300 hrs. Found some sludging. Now using Chevron Delo 400 and really like it, cant tell any difference in performance. Time will tell about the insides of the engine. I did buy some Mobil something (15w40, non synthetic) at the local Sams House of Horrors. Seemed they were discontinuing the quarts and was able to get several cases at $1 a qt. Figured it was worth it.
