My uncle just bought a new 2005 chevy pick-up truck. Has small V-8 engine. He read in the owners manual , the oil may not have to be changed for 100,000 miles. WOW! That's a long time. Should it have read 10,000 miles? What do you all think? What kind of oil comes in these new chevy pick-ups. He would like to switch to Mobil One , like used in his other trucks.

Well all of our truck's and car's have over 100,000 plus miles but my mom's 03' honda CRV. My 87' GMC has 140,000 miles and my grandpa used to pull a fithwheel down to Arizona for 15 years and went to Alaska with it, dosen't use any oil at all. He also kept a book of all the oil changes and times it was in the shop and what for and never went over the 3000 miles for an oil change and just passed the safety and Imm. with flying colors it has the 350 in it. My dad's 95' dodge dakota has 145,000 and runs fine oil changes every 3-3500 miles. My ford is a 99' 7.3L diesil it has 121,000 miles but those will go 400,000 or so if taken care of. My mom's 91' honda civic had 250,000 miles and dad said it was time to get ride of it before it nicked and dimed him to death. Her CRV has 66,000 miles and looking good i think just stick to the old way and you will get a lot more miles out of your truck's and car's. -Tyler

The new engines don't require a 3000 oil change anymore, there a lot cleaner burning than the old
engines. The new V-8 engines run on 4 cylinders when at idle, have no engine mounted fan, just electric on the radiator, have aluminum heads
and are better at fuel milage. The oil sensing
system tells you when to change oil,the book says
once a year or 7500 miles according to the sensor.

I think Mike M has the right advise, the Dealer or manufacture don't care what you do, but when they give you advise, it's more for their benifit then yours, if you wear out the vehicle sooner, they get you sell you another one. It's not the oil that wears out an engine, it's the carbon in the oil...

On a brand new vehicle of rebuild. I replace the oil and filter as soon as it gets home. Then run the same oil the factory had installed then drain as per the manual. Gets the casting sand and metal chips out sooner.

I would do the first change at 1,000 mi. and then every 3,000 thereafter on regular oil. I think if you want to use Mobil 1 I would wait awhile until it was broken in.

I forgot to mention that the owners manual read change oil once a year or 100,000 miles. Which ever comes first.

He might be reading transmission oil change interval. The engine oil should be changed between 3-6000 miles depending on the type of driving he does. If he does decide to go to a synthetic, the truck should be run at minimum 6000 miles on regular oil to get everything seated in and broken in. Even if he goes to synthetic, the standard oil change intervals must be maintained to keep the warranty in effect. If he stretches the oil changes to 10-12,000 miles and has engine problems,Chev. will have good cause not to honor the warranty.A computer readout by the dealer can tell how often oil and filter was changed.

Transmission oil change at 100,000 miles makes more sence to me than engine oil.

Sounds like a typo. The current full-size pickups have oil life indicators, so you just need to change the oil when it tells you to. 10,000 miles between oil changes is typical if you follow the oil life indicator. Note that if you change more frequently, you need to remember to reset the indicator at your oil change. The indicator is based on mileage and type of driving; it doesn't know you changed the oil until you reset it.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing special about the original oil. Just wait until the first oil change comes up and switch to Mobil One. GM has started using Mobil One as factory fill for Corvettes and Cadillacs.

I have changed the oil in my new Silverado (4.8 l) at 3500 and 7000. Now at 8000 my "change oil" message comes on when I start the truck. How do I go about reseting this?

I got one of the mid size colorados with the 5 cyl last may. I had never messed with the oil life, but finally had to reset it at 13,500 miles. It gets changed every 3000, out of habit. DK

I think if you check your manual, you'll find that GM recommends changing the oil at least once a year, whether the oil life indicator says so or not.

I know that on some vehicles you should not rely on the oil life indicator if you routinely pull heavy loads at high speeds. This will confuse the system into thinking you're only driving "highway" miles. I know that on the DOHC 4, 5, and 6 cylinder engines in the mid-size pickups and SUVs, the indicator can go as long as 15K miles between changes. A little long, for sure. I think 3K miles between oil changes if overdoing it, though.

If you reset the oil life monitor every time you change the oil it will tell you what % of oil life you have left. It can save you some money over the life of the truck. It doesn't void the warranty either by getting oil changed based on the monitor system. I'm a Chevy salesman. Drive an '02 Duramax with 254,000 miles.

My new 'Vette was delivered with Mobil 1 in it and the dash message center indicated for me to change at about 7500, then again at about 15000. I think it depends on conditions. I trust the GM engineers...
