We have a JD "A" with rotted original 12-38 Silveton tires on it and a friend can give me a set of noce 15.5-38's for free. Will it work & look okay?

We use the tractor for a couple of parades a year and a little work. Not an original showpiece but we want it to be decent.

Hate to pass up free tires

Thanks

Dave61 - Yes you can put 15.5 tires on a 12" rim if you want to. They will be a little harder to work onto the narrow rim but it will work. I have a set of Goodyear's on 12" rims. For parade duty and light work you will be fine. I use mine to pull with where they limit me to 15.5 tires. The are already mounted so I never bothered to change them. Besides, I like FREE.
Good Luck J

If your tires are actually a 12 x 38, that is the equivalent of a 13.6. You would be going 2 sizes bigger which wouldn't be to bad.

A 12-38 tire is usually mounted on a 10 inch wide rim. A 15-5 38 is usually mounted on a 14 inch wide rim. See the differance? I am not going to tell you that it can't be done, but you will have your work cut out for you just to get those tires mounted on the rim, and even after you do, it just ain't gonna look good.

We have put wider tires on narrow rims Not sure if there is any limits. Tire people tell me it is OK to put the wider tires on, but not to put on tires if they are narrower than the rim.

(Playin follow the leader this am Sid, Grin)

I know of several tires marked with the tire size and additionally on the sidewall is the rim width that allows the tire to qualify for the stated size. Most times it is 1-2 " narrower.

Worst case narrow wheels could make for some side to side motion, like would be experienced on radial tires, or may attempt to round the tread rather than the lugs being flat to the ground, but shouldn't be a problem on what you said. May have to play with air pressure to get the right combination of stability and flat ground contact.

Heck try it. You can always take them off if you don't like it.
