A few weeks ago, I posted a question about a 986 with no 3pt. Well, I went and looked at the tractor and the headgasket was leaking a slow seep. The dealer then took the head off, and discovered that the engine needed a complete rebuild. They also decided it needed a clutch and are replacing it at the same time. Yesterday I found out they found that the TA is also very poor, and they are going to replace it. So now the tractor has a new engine including sleeves, pistons, bearings, etc. as well as a new clutch and now a TA. The tractor has very nice metal, they replaced any bad glass in the cab, and will paint the tractor as well. (They do a nice job painting. If seen other tracors they have done.)I can buy this tractor with all work done, new paint, working AC and heat, 50% rubber for $9000.00 What do you guys think of that for a price? Thanks for any opinions. P.S. 3pt is not needed as I already have 4 decent sized tractors with 3pts. This will be used 90%+ for pulling a round baler and a haybine.

I agree not a bad price even without 3-point I spent almost 8K on eng overhaul on the 886 last and about 6K on the tranny 2 years ago so theres roughly 14 grand but I can't buy a tractor around here to replace the old girl for that kind of money, just need to repaint her. David

Thanks for all the opinions on this tractor. I was thinking this was the way to go, but wanted to reaffirm my thoughts. I guess I'll go ahead and do it. Thanks. M Nut

as the others have stated, if you don't need the 3 point, get it!!!! that's a heck of a deal for all that work done. call another dealer that you don't frequent and ask about getting all that work done, i bet the quote is as much if not more.

The price does not seem out of line. The only problem I see is if you ever decide to sell it the lack of a 3pt might be a problem. By the way I think the 986 and 1086 are the best looking tractors ever made.

I agree with Allen (hate it when that happens). You're paying for the work and getting the tractor for free.

we take off the 3pt or unhook the lift linkage and tie the lift arms up to the cab for round baling and chopping so it doesn't hit the pto. sheared the shaft right off the 2+2 before we started that.

Hey M Nut why would anyone want to round bale with a clumsy 2+2? Sounds like your the one that should be looking for a tractor !!!!!

As long as they do quality work including the paint job I think it a very good deal. Maybe while its tore apart you could price a 3-point setup from a salvage yard. (just a thought)

Hi BP,

That's darned good thinking, but then, they'd probably want $14K for the ol' thing. :>)

Those 986s with that 436 are just sweet old tractors; can't imagine one coming out without a 3-point, can you?

M Nut,

He has nothing in this tractor except his parts and labor and he also knows he'll have a heck of a time selling it without that hitch.

**IF** you can live without the 3-point, go for it because he is really shooting you a good deal. (Please don't ask me how I know this). :>(

Allan
