I gotta ask this question as whenever I go to a tractor show I stop to listen to different tractors that are running. I REALLY appreciate the sound of a quality motor running, and a lot of the guys have put a lot of time and expertise in them. I got some favorites, what are yours? My favorites to hear are of course a J.D. 2 cyl, especially when the governor is compensating. Farmall letter series AlLWAYS sound great. I love to listen to my Ford 661 idle so slow you can count the fanblades. My TO20 sounds really good when in to the governor and skidding a 30' tree. Not particularly fond of the idle sound though. Your thoughts on what you like to listen to?

Howdy,

Well I really like this question. Back in 1993 when I was around 11 or so years old I went to the machinery show down in Georgetown OH and heard what sounded like a lawn mower gone out of control. Pretty soon I saw that it was a huge green and yellow tractor. In a few seconds the lawn mower sound disappeared and a beautiful thud thud sound filled my ears and I fell in love. It was a John Deere R and until the year 2002 I wanted one of those with all my heart. I loved that sound and many times I'd dig out the video tape and listen to that same event. In 2002 I finally got my R and love to listen to it idle down as the front wheels jump up off the ground with each stroke. I love it. The funny thing about that story is that Russel Black, the man I bought the R from, is the one who owned the John Deere R that I first heard back in 1993. Amazing. Oh, by the way, Brian in Ohio. You forgot another great sound we have down on the showgrounds. Remember the old Buckeye oil engine? You just can't beat that beauty. God bless.

I love the sound of my old 9N Ford, held together by various types of glue, wire and clamps, because the sound means that it is RUNNING.

I see several reverences to the 361-D found in the 806 and 1206. My Dad, now 89, recorded the sound of his 806 before he sold it. I'm sure he plays it now and then when he misses the farm. It is a sweet sounding diesel.

I like the sound of a perfectly timed 77 Oliver gas and the whine of the tranny gears in an IH-M while accelerating in 5th gear.

We used to have an International B450, now that sounded wonderful when pulling hard. The German built MWM engines that used to be fitted in Renaults and Fendts over here in Europe were far smoother running than say the equivalent IH, Perkins and Ford 4 and 6 cylinder engines. On the other hand Zetors sound pretty awful.

Well I have got a serious addiction to cranking up the Hart-Parr 18-36 and letting it idle so slow the tractor rocks back and forth. I don"t know if there is a cure?

"favorite tractor to listen to"..... ...you've got to be kidding. Guess I've been around way-too-long; 800-1200 hrs per year in a tractor seat for 40-plus years; give me the whip-poor-will or mourning dove.

I've always liked the sound of the 2-cyl John Deeres. As a kid of about 4 years old, I could recognize a Poppin' Johnny coming down the road before I could see it. I didn't know the others had names. They were just tractors. Now, I like to watch, and hear most all of the old iron, but, none of them get to me like the old Poppin' Johnnies.

My favorite sounding tractor is a road tractor. Nothing else sounds like a Mack V8 with straight stacks. When I'm home, my Cub warms my soul when it starts on the first crank and sounds mean when it pulls hard.....

My favorite is my MM G VI with a straight pipe when I drop the plows and pull the throttle back. That 425 cubic inches just sings. The next is my Cletrac AG6H with a straight pipe. It is sweet when that continental 6 opens up under load. Yeah I know it is not good for my hearing but that is already pretty well shot thanks to flying turbine engine airplanes and helicopters for the Army. My Massey 101 with that Chrysler six and a STRAIGHT pipe is pretty nice. Roger

That's a tough one. Any old tractor that is finely tuned sounds great. If I had to choose, though, I would say that I love the sound of my '52 John Deere A when it's pulling a big load. I also love the sound of Dad's Massey Harris 44, both under load and at an idle. That straight pipe sure makes her talk!

Some of the old Caterpillars make some music, my favorite being the the big slow turning 4 Cyl. D8800 engine in the D7, even better under a load and from a distance, have to get someone else in the seat, to run it though. Still fresh in my mind, had it running yesterday ! It's also great to hear the farmers 620 JD across the valley echoing in, he brings it out for planting and other tasks, every so often, it's been kept in good shape too. With so many developments slated to be built, there won't be a piece of farmland around here for miles, except ours and his ( and he's got his for sale and he's a die hard farmer ! ) It's always a treat to see any tractor in the field for that matter, and he showed up early to plow our best field this year, I've rarely ever missed this annual event since I was a kid, I feel like I missed something LOL ! Strange thing was, this year I found a knitted winter pull over type hat with the business name on it, out there on the edge of the field, must have fell out of the cab, glad to have found it, he'll get a kick out of it when I bring it over to him.

Never found an old tractor that I didn't like the sound of. But as long as you are "forcing" me to choose, I have to say it's a toss-up between a Farmall M when the governor opens up and my 48 JD A under load. The JD A might win by a whisker because it really sounds neat when it's working.

My A JD, I don't use it much but when I put in the field for a little job it always puts a smile on my face. A 620 also, used to have one. My most faverite is any 6 cylinder diesel JD including my 4010. But really like the smooth quite sound of the newer JD's. I've had the green bug every since I was little.

I love listening to the turbo start to boost on a Ford 268. It's very noticeable around 1400, right at peak torque. There's also very few comparisons for a square Ford wound out under full load, wether it's a 7710 on a harvester or just a little 201 powered 4000 or 3930 pulling a loaded wagon. Those little 3 bangers have a steady confident roar about them that's hard to pinpoint. They just love to pull.

Man, even over a mile away I love to hear them rolling hay with a 664 NH round baler. I've got all Fords, with the best mufflers money can buy so there isnt much sound. Glad I dont have to run the 1206's but glad they do.

1966 model Oliver 1950 with the little 4-53 Detroit pulling 6x16's turning 120 hp at 3000 rpms with big injectors and a straight pipe.It was more fun to be about 1-2 miles away listening to it while my Dad or brother were plowing with it.We had a field with a tough clay spot and the little Detroit would come down to 2200 rpms in high 3rd,time to shift the hydra-power to low side and let her hit 3000 again until you hit the easier plowing ground, then back up to high side.It could easily be heard for over 10 miles on a calm clear moonlit night as many people we knew aways off could hear it.Some friends at a small town 8 miles to the north said they used to sit on their porch of an evening and listen to it.

1967 1206 Farmall pulling a 21 ft Krause disk in high 1st.That DT361 sure has a nice turbo whistle.

1969 G-900 MM diesel with a straight pipe pulling a 5x16 MM plow. That 451 with no turbo had a nice deep roar.

This was 35 years ago and we lived in a very rural area where there werent alot of people.Several of the neighbors tractor pulled so straight pipes were pretty common around here.Never once did we have any complaints about the noise. If we farmed after 10 pm or real close to a neighbor the muffler went on.In fact we had several close neighbors that told us they really missed the old Oliver after we traded it off.People used to come all the time just listen to it and more than one rode a round or two on it.Thanks for asking.

By the way a couple of more sweet sounding tractors are the Cockshutt 40 and 50 with those smooth running 6 cyl Buda engines.

We ran into a problem around here with cororate hearing tests. Seemed odd how the corporation was staying out of trouble by not deafening the employees according to their lab. Hearing tests at the clinic in the next town kept finding the same people with hearing loss. I would get a 2nd opinion on those ears.Good to know you are wearing protection now.

While I agree with a couple of others here that there is nothing like the sound of a Rumley Oil Pull under load, I still love the sound of a Model "L" Case under load. (Sorry guys... someone in here has to stand up for Old Abe!)

I think it's in the manifold, but the sweetest sound at any tractor show is that of a 460 Farmall. A 460 fires up & ears just turn to it. Next is a 4010 JD when increasing in rpm-real throaty & better sounding than a 4020; again likely in the manifold; A wd-45's bark with open govenor is special & snappy; A late John Deere A at low rpm is a treat-I think it has a lighter flywheel than say a 60 and because of that the A will fire once like with govenor & hold back about two strokes (kind of a bump cha-cha bump cha-cha); should lower blood pressure; A 400 Farmall with stanley straight-thru muffler is a hearty sound and the 400 or a Moline UB has a special sound when shut down. The correct length straight pipe on a WD-45 is music. A 3-cyl Ford 4000 gas is a unique sound. How about wolfy's five piece band: An A, a 45, a 460, a 400, a 4000.

For tractors any 2 cylinder John Deere under load. The smooth song of a farmall letter tractor. My favorite engine to listen to is a Pratt & Whitney R-1340, though. Starting one up is the best sound, especially early in the morning before the sun comes up. It takes about 30 seconds from the time the first jug hits until all 9 are firing smoothly and you"ve got an exhaust flame to look at in the dark. They sound great at idle or under load.

The ones I am most familiar with:

Farmall Super M after it has been working for a while has a smooth deep throaty sound that I really like. Recently came into a 2N and it sounds OK too for a small tractor. With all due respect to the JD guys, those green tractors are cute but I find that popping noise some of them make to be annoying. I like the rumble of at least four cylinders.

The two cylinder Deeres. The 40 with it's quick putts. The 50 with it's rapid barking. The 60 & 70 gas with solid sharp putts, the 70D with the hard knock at ignition and the deep putt. The 80 sounds like a deeper putt with a ringing echo. The old D's made a slow thumppt.... thumppt...thumppt. The 2-53 Detroit two stroke sounds pretty good in the 435 either blowing snow. Or settling to pull the sled in the 4500lb class. About 1800 rpm 1/2 way up the track then pull the throttle down all the way to 2800 rpms for the last sprint. Makes the heads all come up and look when she gains about 50% more speed at 1/2 track. Of course going from a howl at 1800rpm to a cream at 2800 rpm makes the competion wonder what's next. Of course I wear ear plugs when running any of them.

I like the number-series Deere 2 cylinders that have the two barrel carburetor, and idle mauch more evenly than the older one barrel carb equipped units.

But then, there's nothing that runs any better than my little IH 424 with it's German diesel.

I am of course partial to the Mother Deere tractors. I was raised on the 2 cylinders, then worked for the guys that had the 4020's and 4430's and so on. My only tractor at the moment is a 1961 4010 gas with a straight pipe that has a glass pack inside, I like the looks of the straight pipe but like the sound of the glass pack...kind of a dull roar. However, like some of the others...I like any of them, I can appreciate any color...any style...any sound. They all sound great to me! Like has been said before...keep'em all goin! Mike

I am a JD man at heart but am amazed and very happy to see such a variety of answers to this question! If we ALL liked John Deeres this would be a pretty boring hobby, we need the variety! That being said my favorites are:
1. Any Oil-Pull idling or under load
2. JD 720 Diesel on my grandad's sawmill
3. Late JD A
