I want to boost the battery without removing it. It's a minor pain to remove the battery from my '49 Farmall C.

I disconnected the battery + to ground cable. Do I need to disconnect both battery cables in order to charge the battery normally ?

I've got a small 6/12 V charger but when I hook it up, the "Polarity Warning" light on the charger comes on.

Thanks in advance.

Most people have a problem when they find a + ground system but the zap-u-trons don't care what the ground is, the peoblem in in the persons head so to speak. Just hook it up +-+ and -to-

Simply connect the charger's RED (+) lead to the battery's (+) post and the charger's BLACK (-) lead to the battery's (-) post. There is no need to unhook any cables. The battery and charger connections are the same, regardless of tractor ground polarity.

As a precaution, I always set the charger on a wooden or plastic table or chair or similar stand, or even a plastic bucket with a lid, sitting next to the tractor, rather than on the tractor itself, I have run across a charger or two over the years, usually older units, which have the (-) in common with the charger case. With one of these chargers, there's a potential for a short between the case of the charger, and metal parts of the tractor. While it's unlikely that there's many of these old units around anymore, keeping the charger from sitting directly on the metal of a POSITIVE GROUND tractor is a simple safety precaution.

That makes sense. I'll have to get used to seeing that negative post leading to the starter. Maybe the charger was grounding somehow with the frame and that was causing the warning light to come on.

I usually disconnect the ground cable anyway (safety for kids and prevents slow drain on battery).

Thanks.

You can get a battery terminal connector with a built-in switch, so you just flick the switch to disconnect the battery. Very handy on rigs that have an undetectable leak to ground, and aren't used often enough to keep battery charged.
