1950 Farmall H has a slight miss when running, at idle or full throttle. When its been running for about 10 min, you can pull the throttle and sometimes will take off, sometimes will sputter some, then catch up. Points, plugs, wires, dist. cap all new. What does any one think of plug types.. I have Champions now, and does anyone use different gap settings for the points than what the owners manual says? Is it possibly simple as dist. timing adjustment? And is this adjustment possible by loosing the dist and manually rotating it? I know on older cars you can do this and hear when its running better, and then hit a good meduim between starting and running.

Check to make sure all your plugs are firing. In the past I installed a new set, only to find later that one of them wasn't firing. One time, I installed a new cap, and on one of the electrodes, I started to get buildup, and it wasn't firing, once I cleaned off the buildup, I no longer had any future problems. I have also gone to Autolite plugs, I use 3116 for older engines, and 386 for new or rebuilt.

Also, has anyone installed electronic conversion kits in an H before. I have done this to an older car with great success.

Tony, keep in mind your H was developed from late 1930"s technology, so what you have experienced with old car engines pretty much applies here. If timing isn"t the issue on the miss, you might try some Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel in case the problem comes from a sticky valve.

I put an electronic ignition module (12-volt neg. ground) and 3-ohm Flamethrower™ coil on my "51 H last fall. I"m very impressed with the performance. The tractor starts on the first revolution of the crankshaft every time, even after sitting for 6 weeks or so. I liked it so much, I have ordered it for my "48 Dodge 4-dr. (6-volt pos. ground). I did have to adjust the timing a bit after installing the module but the swap went well.

Yes, you can loosen the two bolts and rotate the distributer to fine tune it. I have put a petronix electric ignition on my H and it works great. You might experiment with another brand of spark plugs, I use autolite 388s. Also check the fuel filters at the sediment bowl and where the fuel line goes into the carborator.
