OT - Dump Truck trailer electric brakes?

As long as I jumped back in here, I'm gonna ask a question.

I have a skid steer and flatbed trailer I pull behind my avalanche. Trailer has electric brakes and is all set up with the Avalanche.

Now I want to pull it with an old Mack 10 wheel dump truck - pintle hitch. What should I do about the electric brakes? Can I pull without them? Do I have to add a brake controller to the Mack? There's currently a wire on the Mack - seperate from the turn signals, that seems to come on with the brake. That's most likely not any kind of controlled brake wire for electric brakes is it?

In Michigan it would be illegil to pull that trailer without the brakes hooked up. It would also not pass the yearly DOT inspection.

The electric brakes for stopping or the automatic electric brakes that come on when the pin is pulled or both?

I know, same brakes, just different actuaction.

Shoot, just lost my response I typed :(

yes to the controller. I'll have to get one. Second went nuts trying to figure out why the tail and marker would light fine with a battery charger power supply, but only markers would come on when hooked to the truck. Pos ground truck and LED taillights. That drove us nuts! Trailer lights are pretty common packaging and we just happened to have another trailer with same light package but bulbs. Took about 5 min to swap.

Now , can I reverse the polarity on the emergency brake. For now I just disconnected the battery on the trailer.

As others have said get you a converter box for the blinkers and brake lights and do not worry about the elec. brakes.

The converter box has 3 wires in and 2 wires out.
Very common.

I would not worry about brakes unless you want to pull a trailer big enough it has air brakes.
Air brakes would be a pain though because you would need a tractor protection valve and the whole 9 yards.

Most brake contollers for the eletric brakes now day hook up to the wire going to the brake lights. It shouldn't be any trouble adding one to that Mack. On the other hand that skid steer and trailor probably won't be heavy enough to even worry about the brakes on the truck. I usto pull a TD-6 dozer with my Diamond-T and never had trailor brakes and also never had any problems with being able to stop. That Mack empty probably weights around 20,000-25,000lbs

Thanks. Yes, empty's about that, so empty truck + skidsteer would not weigh as much as full truck, appx 50,000. I didn't know if it would be jack knifing problem without them.

A related question. Truck currently has a six wire trailer plug. The two turn signal wires do NOT come on with the brake as seems to be standard. There is a separate brake light wire. I'm not sure how to deal with this with respect to the trailer lights as the brake and turn are the same lights. Any ideas out there?

You will need a converter box to make your brake lights work on the turn signal elements. It is a common device as any vehicle with amber turn signals on the rear will require this device if it didn"t come with a trailer towing package. Any good auto parts store should have one. Loy

There should be a wire either at or near the brake pedel or in the air gate on that which is the brakelight switch wire. You will need to wire the brake controler to the side of the switch wwhich gets power when the pedel is pushed.

Dave,
If your pulling that trailer with your avalanch pick up truck, forget the brake problem, because there is no problem. If you put the brakes on the trailer, even with your six wheeler empty you probably wont even notice the trailer tires sqeeling! Larry NE IL

Yes, we've (mostly my son) have pulled it up til now with the Avalanche 1/2 ton. It's a new Redi Haul with electric brakes and it does fine. (nice and flat around here - Plainfield.

Finished getting it hooked to the old Mack this afternoon. He needs it in the morn. Will have to fake the brake lights for now (flip on the markers in the daytime or sumptin). It appears the turn switch that's on it might support a brake light input, but it's not clear that the truck has separate wires for front and back turn lights.

I got pretty well stocked up on Ford 100 series tractor docs, now I have to start looking for Mack R700 stuff :)

We're you the person that was telling me about hauling grain from Marengo?
