I have a Compressor that is the front portion of a Model A Ford car. It uses the two center cylinders to compress and the two outboard cylinders to run. Does anyone have info on these units? This one is in sad shape but I want to restore it.

Jerry, I have one of those little buggers also. There are several info tags on mine, but not to much info. My compressor has two large name plates, one on each side of the hood, with these words. Smith Motor Compressor. Distributed by, Peterson Auto Machine Co. Nashville Tenn... There are two more plates, one on each side, just below the gas tank, with the distributor name, Peterson auto machine co. Mine was built in 1945, I have used it for over 30 years on personal projects, with only one engine rebuild. I have an extra engine to rebuild for mine, but it don't look like I'll ever need it. If you have missing parts or whatever? You can get pictures of a complete machine here..

Thanks so much for your reply! How do I get to the pictures? My machine is missing the distributer and a few other stuff --really sad shape--but I am determined to get it going again. How much air do they make? can you sand blast witha small sandblaster with them?

Jerry, I have seen newer compressors that these will put to shame. I have never put mine to a time test, but it builds air very fast. [mine is set at 150 lbs] I only use it to sandblast, and it will run a fair size commercial sand blasting rig. Your compressor is not a rinky dink, and I think it would be well worth the money and effort to get-er going. I have never put a picture on YT, and have no idea how to do so, so look for my e-mail, subject line will be Redmud.

So, the question is, what do you do about primary ignition to get it to run right on 2 cylinders? By judicious choice of cylinders, can you make it sould like a John Deere or Harley? Mayby I'd want to do this even if I was just pumping air into the air, just to get the fine sound. . .

Mike, the two center cylinders have reed valves with their own intake, looks like a two carb setup. No valve lifters running on the cam for the center cylinders. the engine runs smooth at hi speed, idel is so low and smooth, unlike my last Harley, that you can count the RPM's of the cooling fan.
