Well, I dont know much about these "new fangled" cars but I do know the torque converter thing has been unplugged for some time now.It messed up last year about this time, but the guy that did that said not to worry about it so we didnt tell her.The most she drives this car a week is about 20 miles,so didnt think it was going t obe that big of a deal, but maybe it has caught up to it.It idles a little ruff, and we just couldnt find anything wrong on the outside,so we basically begged her to take it to a shop and she finally agreed. This car should have gone to the scrap heap years ago,it has been wrecked several times, and the last time it was hit the insurance comapny wanted to total it but she wouldnt have none of it.It was the last car her and my grampa bought before he died and she just doesnt want to let go.I was wrong on the miles too,its got like 240000 on it.Thanks guys!

Sticking torque convertor lockup clutch, EGR valve sticking open or idle air control motor sticking, and failing to control idle would be the prime supsects.

John,
It sounds to me like the torque converter clutch is sticking. It's a common problem with the 3 speed auto transaxle on that car. To check it out, find the electrical connector located on the front side of the trans near the cooling fan. Unplug the connector and take her out for a drive. That will prevent the converter from locking up. If that's the case, it'll need a TCC solenoid, located inside the side cover behind the LF wheel. If you can't get to it for awhile, or if money is a problem, it won't hurt to drive it with the thing unplugged for a while. But understand that the gas mileage will be much lower. Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

Generally the "locked up" Lock Up Torque Converter was a problem with the THM125 transaxles... I had a 93 Lumina with a V6 and it had a THM325 I believe. Is the Check or Service Engine Soon light on? Might try a fuel filter... inexpensive and probably needs one any way at 120,000. Bruce in NE Indiana

Throttle position sensor will cause those symptoms as well. It's a moving electrical variable resistor that wears until contact is intermittent. Does the car smoke from the tail pipe or lean out? It could be from water and/or dirt getting stirred up in the fuel tank. Hitting the brakes causes the sloshing. I doubt that she accelerates fast enough to cause the problem to occur then.

Try AutoZone or another parts supplier. Often they can hook up to the car"s computer and diagnose electronic equipment. Having said this, I"m not sure that this car has the correct computer to hook to or not.

Good luck,

Bill

The timing may need a little adjusting. try advancing or retarding it +/- 2 degrees
