Our old Snapper has finally given up the ghost, and so we're looking to buy a new riding mower in the next few weeks. We're looking for a mow-only machine (no plowing or pulling) with at least a 40+ inch cut. Our price range is between $1500 and $2000. We'll need something that can make a decent turn.

I'm asking for your advice because the market is very complicated at the moment. I know manufacturers are marketing under various names, and that Lowe's, Home Despot, etc. sometimes sell the same product re-branded.

Any help you can offer will be much appreciated. I would really like to avoid buying a piece of junk!

Hi all.. Well, we just arrived home with a brand new JD 118. The price after farm-tax exemption was just under $2,000.

Wow! What a nice machine. All the quirks we hated about the Snapper are resolved here: you can cut in reverse with the touch of a button, choke and gas are on separate levers, and the parking brake allows you to leave the mower without killing the engine. The cut is 42" and the engine is a 22hp B&S. Most impressive, however, is how solid the unit feels. This is a sturdy beast.

Again, thanks for the great advice. We're already in love we haven't yet cut a blade of grass! :)

I've been following this saga to its not so bitter end! Do you know that your purchase of this fine piece of workmanship entitles you to a free sun canopy to go with it? If they didn't tell you, see the JD website.

Three words for you. John Deere////ebay.
First I would look at the L series John Deere. I have an L110 that is about the best buy on the market at $1800. It's a far better built machine than many think. I have owed a JD 110 (60's), JD 212, and JD 160, and the L110 cuts better, runs smooter, turns better and has better safety features than any of them. Just don't plan on using it for anything other than mowing grass and you will be impressed. Other idea is to check out ebay, there are some great deals to be had on used mowers, some in almost new condition.

Thanks for all the great comments. We've decided to visit the JD dealer this afternoon and see what they have. I really like price and features of the JD110 and hope they haven't yet discontinued the line. I'll keep you'all posted!

2 years ago I bought a Murray at HD. 2 cylinder Briggs, 21 hp. Was great first season. This year bolts are falling out, deck keeps getting out of adjustment. Engine is fine.

If you're willing to spend that kind of money, you can rebuild your current Snapper to like new condition.

Without getting into brand recomendations and such, consider what you liked and disliked about the unit you now have. Is zero turn radius important? Hydrostat type drives? Steep slopes? etc. Use that sort of thing as the basis for helping you decide what sort of machine would be good for you.

Can't fix up the old one, at all? Was at a Home Depot about a year ago, the Deeres were going for $5K easily there. Been going to the Deere guy who's got my tractor the last month and a half, and he's got a lot of garden tractor and mowers, but haven't looked at them. Just want my tractor back. Was at Lowes for something, and they had Cub Cadets, Toro Wheel Horses (not real Wheel Horses), Simplicitys, some green Yard-somthing or other, and Troybilts. All had something within you range, but all are/were MTDs, so... Might've even had Ariens too, don't remember. Couldn't help but notice, were blocking the entrance.

Here's a deal. One of my sisters and her husband bought a 48" Troybilt a couple of years ago. Paid like $3,200 or so I heard. About a month ago, sold that Troybilt for $1,100 at a garage sale because the brother-in-law has night school these days (nights), and was too big for my sister to feel comfortable on. So, they bought his mother's 2 year old plastic MTD Wheel Horse for like $500 because she now has a lawn service, and is much smaller with a 32" deck. So how many times has my sister touched it since I went and picked it up for them? Not once. And now my brother-in-law's got the smallest rider mower in the whole dang'd subdivision, and takes much longer to mow the lawn on Saturdays.

Hey?!?! How about an old B or Cub, or something like that? Am thinking a Popper's a little big. Hmm? Turf tires? Woods or Ingersol? Can get for that, and will last at least another 50 years... Hmm?

Here is a comparison of the different series of John Deere mowers:

Here are the no interest, no payment details. I think this is only available at a John Deere dealer:

I recommend a John Deere. I bought a STX 38 in 1989 for $2k. A lot of money in those days but my nieghbor has gone through 3 cheapo tractors in the time I've had my John Deere. My John Deere is still rolling strong. My nieghbor got a STX 38 at a local auction, and uses that exclusively. Get a J.D.

Go with a cub cadet 2000 series. Shaft driven cast iron transmission. The cheaper cub cadet LT 10 series is comparable to the John Deere products mentioned above.

Snapper is still in business, if you were happy with the old one, why change brands?

Watch out for the big green Murrys that have a John Deere sticker. Made as a cheap line for Home Depot a genuine JD cost more but is heavier made. I have a Huskavarna with a Kawasaki 18hp, 48" deck. Nice mower, eng is said to be 2nd only to Honda. I paid $2600 but I've seen them cheaper since then ( I'm always the sucker who pays and then shops)

The JD I'm talking about is made by someone to JD specs and the same mower can be bought 3 miles up the road at the JD dealer for the same price..... and it has a Kohler 17.5 hp engine and is definely not a piece of junk.

Not knocking the mower just saying be careful. JD dealers complained about the low cost at Home Depot so JD gave them the same one. When I was shopping around, the dealer I was talking to told me that story. He may have just wanted to sell the Husky to the sucker (me)@! I do like it. He had all models of JD's for sell too. Setting side by side you could see and feel the difference in the thickness of the deck.

The way I got the story JD didn't want to slight their dealers when HD was looking for a brand to sell. They knew JD was hot and FYI their previous Scotts brand was an excellent machine.....just gave mine to my son (15-42) and there is nothing wrong with it. Had it for 5 yrs.

Funny on the deck comment. That is one place I look for quality and I really liked the deck on mine. It's a 42" and 2 blades and well engineered. Doesn't scalp and is very easy to level....if you have to.

With out a doubt you are in the market for a JD L110 automatic. Has the Kohler engine, steers very easy and turns in an 18" circle. Very sturdy and well built. Very good fuel economy. Very quick with the hydrostatic transmission. I love ours. In our second season. Sold by the local JD dealer or Home Depot and serviced by the local JD dealer.....same price both stores.

Can't go wrong.

They arn't making the L110 this year - its the L111 with a Briggs and Stratton Engine in it. (I used to have a L110 and it was stolen and we just bought a L130). With your price perameters, try Cub Cadet...I cite this example:

My new L130 Cost about $2,566.00 with dealer instant rebates and Ohio Sales Tax. It has 23 hp and can handle 2.5 acres.

The Garden 1554 at TSC is $2,599.00 and is a garden tractor that you can put a sleave hitch on. The closest JD that can do that at like a Home Depot is the G110 and that costs $3,699.00.

I would definitly recommend any lawn tractor with a Kohler Engine in it. Those things are hard to kill. I wish that jerk who stole my lawn tractor hadn't but oh well.

To Sum this up, if you can find a L110 go for it. Its a great machine. If you can't spring for one irregardless of the brand with a Kohler engine it. Like i said, less fuss in the long run.

10-4 on the Kohler. We like the 42" machine because of it's 18" turning circle and narrow width allow us to manuever around our 160 trees in the yard..... live fence on 3 sides....keep out the noise and dust from the road.

I just purchased a John Deere LT190 two days ago. Deere currently has nothing down, no interest, and no payment until January 2007.

Just putting in some info. The LT is Lawn Tractor. The L is lawn mower. You will pay more bucks for the LT190. Go and read my post.

One problem and it's no big deal. If you drive your plastic hooded JD under your shrubs with stiff limbs you will scratch the plastic much easier than painted steel. Otherwise a perfect machine.

I would stay away from Craftsman. I have one, and the tractor itself is OK, but the mower deck is absolute junk. I've had the deck out from under it more times than I care to count.

My advise... Invest the money and buy a John Deere. You may have to pay more, but if you take care of it, it'll last you a lot longer.
