We always figured in dead head on a round trip after all if you have to drive to get there you should get paid for it .Last time I broke down the tow charged 1.00 per mile dead head and 1.75 loaded .

I get $1.50 per loaded mile. If I have to drive over 50 miles to pick up the load I get 60 cents a mile for every mile after the first 50. One ton truck with 14,000 pound rated trailer.

Allan, that deadheading is what pretty much kills the profit, and with a rig the size of mine it's just about impossible to find a backhaul in a reasonable time frame. Spending the night at a motel kills the profit real quick also. For these reasons I don't really advertise my hauling services too much, plus the fact that I am not DOT registered, but that's a whole different issue.

Now Allan, let"s just think about this for a minute. I think we could all make a buck here. I could go up to Iowa, $.75 a mile empty, load Rusty"s rig on mine, get $1.50 a mile, cause I"m loaded, Rusty gets $.60 a mile cause he"s empty, we go out to your place, haul your stuff what, 42 miles? and then come back home with the same scenario. The only thing I can see is we"re gonna have to get more trucks. Remember, we"re there for ya buddy, :-) Harley
