Gas is $2.29.9 for E-10 and $2.39.9 for regular unleaded at our local filler up and 2 Jelly filled doughnuts and a super sized coffee to go. Man, oh man. When I started driving quite a few years ago, it was .20 cents a gallon. Cost me 1 dollar for 5 gallons. Model T or Model A would not hold $2 worth unless it was completly out and you had to push it into the station. Course on the other hand, that about $2 to fill the car was about as hard to come by as $20 and something is now.

Was up to $2.469 earlier this week here in central Michigan. Down to about $2.369 now. If you know the staions to buy from, usually off the beaten path, you might be able to find it a couple cents less, but don't set your hopes too high, (low). Man, am I bummed!

Grand-daughter just drove in from Pascagoula, MS, says gas is $1.91 a gallon there! Better go there and fill up, at least once a week or so! I have a Class 3 motor home, Dodge 440, 4 barrel carb, 10-11 miles to a gallon! I'm trying to sell it, but those who can just afford to buy it, can't afford to buy much gas for it, and the folks who don't worry about gas prices will buy something much newer! (The old rock and a hard place, eh!) RJ

We got a tank of gas today for our older girls, and the fuel man said by Monday it'll be up to $2.50. We should've got a full tank!! I'll have to fill up tomorrow, and thank god I just gave my truck a fresh air filter and a few other goodies. Been driving on the same tank since Sunday evening, about 40-50 miles/day. Can't tell for sure as the speedo/odometer's been busted for about 30,000 miles now.

Delbert, my man, it was harder. If gas had kept pace with inflation it should be around $20 per gallon now. As I said before, we"re spoiled.

We get all of our foreign oil from countries that are members of OPEC. It doesn"t matter where it comes from, they have a price for the consortium. One of the main reasons gas costs so much overseas is the much higher taxes on it that their governments charge.

funny thing is, people will complain about the price of gas, but when they pay $1 for a bottle of water, thats the kicker. Lets say that bottle of water equals a quart. That would make water $4 a gallon, making gas look like a pretty good deal

Don`t buy no fancy water in a see thru bottle. Put it in a canteen and drink outta there. Shhhhsh what are we coming to? Buy your canteen, refill it and save enough to buy your gas. LOL

Somebody always compares it to water and it doesn"t make sense.
You don"t drink 20 gallons of water at a time and you have a choice whether you drink it or not.

Exactly, obviously Egbert is an inner city dweller. The only bus that runs out here is the school bus, and it doesn't run year round. I also have 15 miles to the town where I can shop, that is 30 miles round trip, and I would like Egbert to demonstrate how you can bring home a weeks worth of grocerys or heavy machinery parts on a bicycle.

Sorry Rusty...Iīm no innercity dweller...and even Ihave to use my car...and my post was only a thoughjt what to do was. Would You agree with me, that our Governments ( not only olīGeorge) had been clever?
They gave us cheap fuel and cutted bus connections. Everyone goes to the big supermarkets and the shops in town ( we have about 2000 population here) closed their doors.
So we needed our cars, cause we arenīt able to miss em.
And now as the oil price is high ( hey whatīs about our american oil ????) they set tax level higher and we all have to bleed..... more money for the gov...less for us.
BTW: Not sure if Iīve heard that right, but is it possible, that in europe cars ran with 50mpg?? and nearly the same comfort like we have here???

You still have the choice of getting a more econ vehicle. Combining trips into one, spend more time at home, etc, etc.

Part of it is the American public, not necessarily you, wants to maintain and keep a life style as they had in times of plenty and cheap.

There are always choices, many not exactly what we "want" tho.

On the subject at hand tho, isn't the US a member of OPEC????? ????? ?? Opec determines the price, not GWB or anyone else.

Actually GWB does have a lot to do with the price. If he wanted it to happen, he would be politicking and have his people working wherever to make it happen.
He has consistently signed away or gave to big business from his first day in office.

A more economical vehicle? Get real, my truck is a truck, it works for a living, doing it's best to earn me a living. I challenge you to find a truck that can gross 24,000 pounds and get 30 miles per gallon, it does not exist.

Its amazing how many miles I put on my 95 ford escort 5 speed w/ a 1.8 liter. You dont need a 24000 GVW vehicle to make every parts run, grocery trip, etc. I like to watch the 99 f-350 sit in the driveway.

Hey Delbert,
I've already griped about this - but when I heard gas in Japan was around $6 / gallon, I didn't feel so bad about paying a little over 2 bucks.
It's the price of the jelly filled donuts that are out of hand!!

One thing to keep in mind when comparing gas prices in other countries, Japan 6 dollars a gallon etc. Those countries use a lot of mass transportation, the people who do own cars use them mostly for pleasure, and do not have to pay $6.00 a gallon just to get to work or to the grocery store. $2.00 a gallon in the U.S. is just plain too high.

Think about where your 2.199 for a gallon of gas goes..... ..... ...

Oil is 62.00 a barrel
That is 1.4761 per gallon
Gas is selling on the open market for 1.7450 today.
That means the refinery is getting 0.2689 to refine and store it.
0.0200 to haul it from the refinery to the store.
0.3890 tax
that leaves 0.0450 profit for the store.

So tell me who is getting the most profit out of a gallon of gas. Notice it is the one that puts nothing in and has no investment involved.

Hey Rusty,
Don't get me wrong - I'm not happy with $2.28 / gal at all!! Just glad I don't have to pay what they do. I know it's about 4 to five bucks a gal in Europe too. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't most of our oil come from Alaska and S. America?
Can't figure out why when something happens in the Middle East, the gas prices go up - instantly!!
One station will raise it 10 - 20 cents a gal / while the station across the street remains the same. (At least for a while!) Sounds like we're getting ripped off here...

Illinois Boy,

I may be wrong about this, but my understanding is that we get no oil from Alaska. I have been told that all of it is exported to foreigh countries for refining. Maybe someone who knows for sure will correct that.

I think that the oil coming from South America is very small in relation to mid-eastern oil. Here in Tennessee, the only brand that I know for sure comes from South America is Citgo and the prices there are not any lower than any other place.

In any event, considering the rate of inflation in our country, the $.35 oil in 1965 is about on target with the $2.35 oil today.

I buy diesel from a small mom and pop station. I know he only gets a load once a month as he doesn't move that much fuel. Last crisis I noticed his fuel went up about 6cents overnight next week up again 10cents. So I said "I see you bought some more fuel" He just looked at me kinda funny. I know and he knows he didn't replace any fuel. Just taking a little liberty with the going prices. Jerry

US oil imports -about 40% of use. Alaskan oil heads to Japan, Asia, etc.- west coast refinery capacity minimal, unable to handle Alaskan crude, more practical to ship to asian refineries instead of transport it to east coast. Cross Canada pipeline to Midwest region being worked on- small diameter pipes currently restrict flow, midwest capacity not much extra, little bit would help but not much. Imports from Mexico, Canada help close to border markets some. S American oil from restless countries sometimes interupted, Nigerian oil (about 5%? of import) also subject to disruption. Iraqi oil tied up in legal issues for purchase- mostly went to Europe anyway. Iran doesn't ship here- political issues and market sense. US refineries restricted by pollution laws, local political issues(See California!). US oil and refinery production just about at maximum existing production now- need some reopened wells and more refinery capacity. One way to cut down bitching- NO refined oil to be shipped to California, they could get heavy sour crude and refine it themselves in state, build clean refinery, change their pollution laws a bit, or walk a lot. Would leave other oil for rest of country and reduce ear pollution from California politicians and irresponsible activists. Check out horses, go Amish! RN.
