Can you damage a generator by using a 200 amp jump starter on the battery? The old 60's generator always worked properly til today after I used a 200 amp starter-charger to start the tractor (which had set for two months). Ran it an hour, needle straight up; turn on lights it would show discharge; but needle never showed pos. Did I screw up again?

Thanks, folks for the info. This is a restored 60 with near new battery -and I don't run it often enough. It didn't fire the other day til I weakened the battery. 200 amp starter charger & it started. 12 volt batt, pos ground, hooked charger ok; mowed about an hr; no charge shown on guage-even after I turned lights on then off. Started it today(two days since); it started after more cranking than it should have taken and guage showed just a wee bit of charge. I figure that 200 amp hit on a near new battery must have quickly charged it til it didn't need any more charge that day. Possible?

If the tractor has set for a while with a dead battery then you may need to re polarize the generator.

Sure the generator or regulator didn't fail before you parked it? Probably why you had to jump it today.

Wolfman, Electricity can do strange things, but in general jumping or charging a battery shouldnt damage the Generator assuming all was done correctly???? The batterys connection to the Generator should be via the BAT terminal on the Voltage Regulator and there should be an OPEN cutout relay sitting there in between the BAT and ARM terminal which is whats connected to the Generator.

If you want a detailed troubleshooting guide to help isolate Generator or Voltage Regulator problems post back n let me know.

John, yea but he does not say if it is 12 or 6v. If it is 6v and he jumped it with 12v. at the battery he has probably fried the regulator... Just a thought, Richard

Never seen a 60 with a 6V factory system.

Good point Richard, I have seen batteries blown up by jumping 12 volts to a 6 volt battery. However, the only connection from the battery to the regulator is on the VR"s BAT terminal and theres still that normally OPEN cutout relay setting there which is electrically BETWEEN the VR"s BAT terminal and the Generator (same as VR"s ARM terminal) and its DC voltage withstand rating is far above 6 or 12 volts.

Stilllll ll arcing electricity can do strange things and even though in theory he shouldnt have hurt it by what he did DONT BET TOO MUCH MONEY ON IT LOL Theres other lil circuits n windings n resistors inside that VR which I agree he may have fried grrrrr rrrrr rr

Take care, John T

Thanks,John. I'm not sure that I'm smart enough anymore to follow a troubleshooting guide. Too many "same-day" surgeries & blows to the head. Wayne S., retired mathematics professor. (always admired the EE's knowledge).

The generator should not have been damaged, unless you connected the cables backwards, and jumped the battery with reverse polarity.
