I am trying to find out the name of a machine that was used in the 1950s to load sugar beets from the beet pile into railroad cars for transportation to sugar factory. It was a crawler type loader with a bucket that went over the top of the machine so it did not have to turn around between loading the bucket from the pile and dumping the bucket into the hopper car. I think it was all mechanical (wheels and pulleys - no hydraulics).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jim Armstrong - Idaho

Thanks Mike. I'm sure this machine was a crawler - whether it was owned by the sugar company or the railroad, that I'm not sure.

Oliver put a loader on some of their industrial wheel tractors that did the same thing- it was mentioned recently in Oliver Heritage magazine. Used for loading dirt, rock, etc. without jockeying around. Canopy over driver was a "required" option with that loader- no kidding!

Ask about this on the Red Power website. In the crawler section they talked about one of those recently.

Thanks, Harley for such a fast reply.

Being only 6 or 7 years old when I saw the machine in action, it seemed a little larger than the D4 you pictured. I believe it was more on the scale of a D6 to a D9 but again, everything looks "big" to a 7 year old.

I thought I remembered it being built in Utah and had an odd name but I could be mistaken. The structure and mechanism is very close to what I remember.

Thanks again Harley for your help, Jim.

I took that picture at the Elnora, IN tractor show last Saturday. I believe that this one was used to rip coal from a strip mine. Could be wrong on that but the ripper teeth and being in stripper country lends the thought to that.

If I remember correctly the name of the manufacturer was Atherly or something close to that. Wish I had got more detailed photos.

The name "Atherly" sounds very close to what I am able to remember; I'll do some more research based on the info you have provided.

Thanks again - The quest continues!!

Ya I borrowed that picture from your post Gary, cause that was faster than telling him where I saw it. Thanks, Harley
