What Kind of ATV you like and why? What sort of chores does it get used for ? I have two , MAXll 6x6 atvs. Kinda fell into both of them cheap . I use the newer one for hauling fire wood, settign up deer stands , clearing logging trails, mount 25 gal spraying on back and spray weeds etc . Real handy , will go anywhere . The older one has 340 JLO 2 stroke in it ,, pretty much just a go fast have fun with one .

I have a Polaris 500, my brother a 330. We used them for hauling deer (heart attack prevention). pulling whole cedar logs for our next project, hauling wood, pulling deer stands up, tow a brush hog to clean ATV trails, spraying, pulling the boats up from the lake in the fall, and just plain fun!

We purchased a Ingersol Rand. Like a golf cart but has the all terrain tires, 7" clearance, side by side seating, roof, windshield, and a 15 foot dump box. If not hauling things, I just use it to go and get the one tool I need that I left back in the barn. Getting tired of walking back and forth.

We have two Arctic cat's and we love them good high gears but those low gears are nice for pulling and hill climbing. I erge you to take a peek at them!

I have a Honda 450 4X4 (2003) that I bought new. It has the manual transmission which is hard to get a big boot under, especially with the optional footboards that I installed. It will climb a tree, go through any mud I can find, climb hills that you could not walk up, and carry me and the wife at the same time. The only thing I do not like about the honda is the brakes. They are always messed up. I take them apart and clean them and they work for about two days before they are grabbing, squealling or just not grabbing. I finally bought a 2002 used Polaris 400 4X4 with the automatic transmission and I love it. The four wheel drive is excellent, the ATV is powerful enough to load down with feed, seed or chain saws and haul out to the woods, even with a second person on the back. Both of the ATV's get excellent fuel economy and I am giving my worn out knee a few more years before I go under the knife. I drag logs with either ATV, and I have pulled the hay trailer (empty) up a long hill with the Honda with no problem. I am looking hard at the Kubota 4X4 diesel. It has the wide bench seat that will accomodate me and the wife side by side. The neighbor bought one and he really swears by it. He hauls rock up from the river with his, and it is straight up hill most of the way. He has hauled a round bail to the field on the electric dump bed and he says it handled it very well. Price has me cold. At 10K, I have a bunch of stuff that needs attention before I turn loose of that much hard earned coin. I'm afraid the wife might start pushing the issue of a new horse if I get another toy. Might send her to Nebraska for a while if she keeps pushing it. Oh well!

3 years ago I got one, been farming on my own since 1987, never thought I needed one, figured it would just be a play pretty as dad calls stuff. How wrong was I. Bought a 99 Honda Foreman 450 off ebay for $3300 that spring. Came out of Florida. Its been a gem, in 3 years I've put over 3000 miles on it and (and never left the farm). I got it b/c I got tired of my truck being stuck. It and my skid loader are the to most beneficial investments I've ever made on the farm.

We’ve a variety. The first one was a pile of Cushman junk unloaded at the farm for no place else to go. Bro’ was seriously injured and handicapped. Started working on Cushman in spare moments. Impatient he picked up an EZGO golf cart. Had a convertible seat rear deck added to it for chores and prospective cattle buyers ride. It’s a good summer runner. The Cushman finally done, have fit it with ground driven electric fence wire winder attachment and wound wire deployer for running fences. Picking wire up and putting out as needed for season grazing changes. Don’t know what I would do without it, it saving my fencing’s legs and heart. Last one is a 6x6 Polaris Ranger. suits my Bro’ needs particularly well for winter use. Two drawbacks: one, the front hubs supposedly need rebuilding every 200 hrs (just did one with 500 hrs on it). Second, parts availability/delivery really sucks all the way from the manufacturer through the dealer to us.

WEll...I got a Honda 200 3 wheeler,Great for chasing cattle. It"s great for running around the farm.But....I have a old Cushman Golf cart that I use for everything else. Its 4 wheeled and has a steel body.Electric.Can"t beat it.I can haul 10 sacks for cement at once.Thats almost a thousand lbs.I go after mail, set electric fence,Work(dope) my pairie dog town.It great for that.Just stop get off and hop back on and hit the gas pedal. No starting or gas.I charge it about twice a week.Very low maintaince.I give 300.00 for mine and it has ran non stop for 3 yrs.Same batteries. But it sure could use new ones.I can go about 20 miles now where with new batteries a could go maybe 30.Wife hauls dog ,chicken, calf feed on it all at once.No more lifting and carrying them. She get the mail, gathers the eggs, bucket feed the calves with it.She get more use out of it than me.Guess I have to buy me one with big tires and a lift kit on it to show her.We love it and use it 10 times as much as the 3 wheeler.Best thing it don"t use GAS or EAT.

We're on our second golf cart. The first, a $500 Yamaha g1 gas, did a great deal of work, primarily trailer-hauling, but one fall I carried out a winter's wood in the box on the back and gathered sap in a 55 gallon drum the following spring. After five years its oiler gave out and I went to cart number 2:

An EZ-Go 2 cycle. Instead of a box on this one we went with a 2" receiver hitch and custom trailer, leaving space for two or three passengers to crowd onto the back. For a $1000. purchase price we've had two years of trouble-free work so far, with no letup in sight.

Bryan, I don't have or use one, but if I might take a moment to correct you, isn't "off topic" nor "way off topic". They're getting pretty popular for various aspects of farming, including the ones you've mentioned. Good luck with yours, and work it safely.

About a month or so ago, used something similar for about a week at work. Was small, 2 seater, quad 4x4, 20+ HP Briggs Vangard, similar to a gator and the likes, and was pretty slick. Came with a hydraulic dump bed option, ROPS. Was slick for small jobs, but will be danged if can remember who made it. Figured to go for about $8K.

It's way off topic for Bryan because you can see by what he is using his for farming is off topic for him. If he were farming or something near it he'd see the real value of these units regardless of the brand and it wouldn't be deer stands..... .

I have a small irrigated ranch and I use my Kawasaki Bayou 250 2WD when I move my handlines and the wheel line during water changes. It save me a lot of walking especially when my pumps trip off and I'm over 3/4 of a mile from the pump house or if I blow a riser, or a latch unhooks, or the sprinkler head fails, etc. The first year I was on the place I used shank's mare to get around and I was always behind on the watering. Not anymore. By the way, my son who knows quite a bit about ATV's advised me to get a 2 WD machine for my place. Said I didn't need the added weight, complexity, and cost of a 4 WD. He was right. I can do everything my neighbors with 4WD do with my 2WD and it cost half as much and burns much less fuel.

I"ve had a 1999 Honda Recon (250cc) for allmost a year now, I don"t know what I did with out it. I find it"s cheaper to run the Recon back and forth from field to shop for tools and back than the truck. I can run a long time on one tank of gas. It"s not real big or fast or powerful, but it does everything I need it to. I also use it for play. 2wd won"t take me everywhere, but with good tires, it"ll take me where I need to go. Rich

Considered a farm machine here, E.G. tractor. We get the rebate for both the sales taxes. And claim depreciation on the income tax. Apparently they can now be plated and insured as a highway vehicle in some or all of Ontario.

OK, now someone finally has my attention. I've had very little experience on ATVs, but in recent years I've been grateful that they've become more handy and versatile. In our area, tractor implements have flooded the market because people are switching over, so bargains can be had. And if I'll get tax depreciation and highway plating, I'll have to take the plunge sooner or later. Otherwise, I feel an old tractor is a much better value.

When the kids are gone from home, the mrs is at her teaching job, they're handy to drive up onto the cornhead, ride home, and get the tractor and wagon. I think I need to mount a cornhead on more machines..... saves walking/biking.

3 Deere diesel Gators. 1 is pretty rough,1 fair shape,1 is 2 months old( the wife claimed that one)They get used for everything from feeding, fixing fence, running back and forth to the fields, spraying fence line, and the missus's yard work. They save alot of wear and tear and damage to the pickups, and run alot cheaper too.

Suzuki King Quad. Grandson hates it, cuz it's slow, but it's perfect for what I use it for. Hi/Lo/SuperLow, 2WD/4WD/4WD-Lock, and nearly any combination of the above (Must be in SuperLow to use 4WD-Lock) gives me a gear for every occasion. Winch on the front is the handiest thing since a pocket on a shirt.

Haul feed, haul tools, stretch fence, lug firewood, you name it. Useful all year, and ESPECIALLY useful in the spring when the tractor would chowder up the whole pasture. Combination of (relatively) light weight and big tires lets me get the job done with minimum damage.

Bryan,
This is right OT...
Still using 3 wheeler here. Never had a problem 'cause only put around. (Do not go 90mph!!) Use it to haul fence supplies, seed, go to and from fields for dinner or if gonna leave equipment somewhere overnight. Check on livestock, pull deer out of the woods, run to the neighbor's house, pull a small trailer for yard work, firewood - you name it. I'd be lost without that puppy. Mine's a 1985 Honda 250 Big Red and was bought brand new. Only thing I've ever done is replace battery.
Nothing fancy, but reliable as all get out!!

I had to look at the name on this post and make sure I didn't have a lost moment. Sounds just like me except for the don't go 90 part. I like to go fast once in a while. Use my Honda 250 Bigred for fencing, chasing livestock, haul firewood, drag stuff.....

I think this is right ON TOPIC as most farms around me use ATV's for many chores they used to use small tractors for. I can't comment as to good and bad as I only have an old Yamaha Badger 80 for the kids and me on our 3 acres.

You might just have hit the most On Topic discussion you could have come up with. All us old guys use these kid toys to keep from walking all over the place doing chores, going out to check on livestock, repairing fences, etc., cause we don't have to get the truck out most of the time. Just jump on these and go. VERY handy. Harley

We have a JD gator, the 4x6 one with the four driven wheels.

It works great for lots of stuff already mentioned, taking trash out to road, hauling feed, firewood, building fence, you name it.

The big tires let you float over stuff that if you tried to take a truck thru you would just make ruts.
