My son has located a truck in Salt Lake that he is really interested in. It is a 1996 Ford 250 with a diesel. The truck is represented with 135,000 miles and appears by the photo to be in good shape. Is anybody aware of a service that I could pay to go out and inspect this truck before he flies to Salt Lake to drive it home to Kentucky? I am aware of a service like that for collectable cars, but I am not aware of a service like this for used vehicles. Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. He is booking his flight already and I just want to head him off from a beating if I can.

I don"t know about an inspection but there is a company buying trucks in TX and bringing them up to TN, KY and IN to sell. They all look really nice and their website shows lots of pictures of each.

Somebody can call me out for this being a for sale ad, but it is not. I am in no way affiliated with this company. I just know of them. They specialize in Diesel trucks.

The savings on price has to be there to make it worthwhile. My friend at work bought a 2003 Ford off ebay in Texas, we're in Mich. The price was so good it was worth a one way plane ticket to go get it. He could have sold it when he got home for a profit. Evidently there are more pickups in TX. He also bought a classic Mustang from Calif. and got a good deal. He buys a few wrecks and fixes and sells them so he knows the ropes a bit. Carfax can be wrong too. There are ways to "back door" the system. He wanted to buy a burned wreck for the driveline and Carfax verified the mileage. I don't know how they could the interior was fried. He got a refund from Carfax.

Carfax gets their data from DMV records, and service records from the dealers and others who bother to record milage and and report same when services are performed. Apparently insurance companies are involved too, if vehicle comes to their attention because of claims. I've found the service useful, but incomplete fro two vehicles I purchased used lately.

What's so special about this truck that it's worth the added expence of a long flight to get it and a long drive to get it home? Besides the cost of the truck, how many more dollars is he going to have tied up in with the actual expence as well as the time of going after it and getting it home. That's not even mentioning the idea that you can't really inspect it until you get there. I'd shut the door on this deal in one quick hurry. Only buy one that you can get to and drive before you plunk down any green. I wouldn't go half way across the country to get a plain old every day Ford, not if it had a gold plated foot feed.

two questions. First, Why can't it be sold closer to where it is now? Second, Isn't there a diesel Ford for sale a lot closer to your home? Shoot, I know of about 20 for sale around here.

Me thinks the youngster may learn a expensive lesson about his fellow man if he follows through.

I used CARFAX on a truck one time. It don't tell everything but will inform you if it was ever wrecked, flooded, or burned. Also any recalls that might apply. I don't remember but I think it cost about 20 bucks. You need the VIN number to run the report. If the seller won't give it then don't buy it.

Have no connection or experience with this firm, but found them with a Yahoo search. Sounds like a franchise setup, which probably has offices in SLC. Offers 1-2 hour inspections from $129 to $189 (cheap, if a big problem is looming in the near future).
Good Luck

I don't know of any service like that but if I were buying the truck sight unseen I absolutely would not pay for it until I had a chance to inspect it in person.

I agree 100%. A fellow I know just bought a '68 Camaro California car over the internet basing his decision on e-mails, photos, and verbal descriptions. He paid $20K for it. He now has it in WI and is quite disappointed. It's sorta one of those 50/50 deals. From 50 feet away or going past it at 50mph it looks great but don't look too close. Glenn F.
