We'll be passing through the Omaha/Council Bluffs area in about three weeks, on a Sunday. I'll have a few hours free while my wife is at a show. Besides being a Farmall owner, I'm a railroad buff, so the Union Pacific museum would have been at the top of my list, but it is closed on Sundays. Unfortunately, my schedule on this trip isn't flexible. Any intersting collections of tractors/farm equipment in the area? Even just a tractor dealer with a good 'back lot' of old stuff would keep me busy. Has to be very close to Omaha-Council Bluffs area for me to have time to see it.

Very interesting is the Mormon Trail Museum in North Omaha. There are dioramas depicting pioneer life in the area and on the trail West. It is free but I am not sure of the hours.
Going East on I-680 take the last exit before the Mo. river bridge. Go about 10 blocks South and turn right. The museum is at the top of the hill on the left. There are signs to direct you where to turn. Ed

The SAC museum is at Ashland, which is at the exit already mentioned. If you want to see trains, you will be right by the BNSF mainline at Ashland, (Melia Hill is the steepest grade on the Burlington between Denver and Omaha) or go up to Blair and watch the UP on the Fremont-Missouri Valley line, especially on the bridge over the Missouri, or go to Valley and Fremont and you are right next to the UP mainline, and follow it west along the Platte. Or if you want to see farming country, just look anywhere around you. Go to Lincoln and see the capitol, which is supposed to be a dupicate of the one at Baton Rouge, LA. Unfortunately, there is nothing much left where the "World's Largest Livestock Market" used to be in South Omaha. Hell, you might even see me, if you're looking north of Linoma Beach.

Well - actually the Capital building in Lincoln was built over a ten year peiod from 1922 to 1932, using a design drawn in 1920 (they built as funding became available, hence the building was paid for when it was completed). The Baton Rouge Capital was built between 1930 and 1932 using a similar, but very different design.

There is a railroad museum in Council Bluffs, its housed in the old railroad depot there. I feel its very good, have at least 2 steam locos, and several cars too. It is on the south side of CouncilBlufs, take the Lake Manawa exit, and go north into town. The Western Heritage museum in downtown OMaha is good too, it is in the former Union Pacific depot. Local history as well as some UP history. The building itself is worth looking at. Either one could keep you busy 2-3 hours. John in Nebr.

SAC Museum is about 15 miles west of Omaha, just off I-80, I THINK the exit is 427. Don't know if is open on Sunday, but worth it if it is.
