Saw a pickup with vertical exhaust stacks behind the cab today and one of my co-workers asked if they do anything special or was someone just wanting to make their pickup look like a "big rig". I can't think of a reason on why anyone would want vertical exhaust stacks. Any thoughts?

The last time I did something like that was to a 1946 Studebaker 1/2T pickup. Used a couple of old torque tubes through the corners of the box.
Of course that was about the same time that I was ruining a 1956 Chevy Sedan Delivery wagon by putting a Ford pickup front straight axle under it!
Ah...Youth?

I got a little one(2.5") on my "71 C-20 I put a Cummins in..... ....Main reason was it actually cut the noise in the truck(Can"t hear it run with the stack), it got the smoke out of the cab that came up through the shifter boots, and it was a less of a bent run from engine to stack than underneath to the rear which seems to restrict less.

We had them on our farm trucks(Old C-10 Chevys) so when hauling wagons out of the fields a back firing 292 wouldn"t start a BIG fire..... ...Usually ran 2" pipe straight back from the engine and with 2 elbows up and out in front of the wheel on the step side box..... ..Can"t beat the sound of a 292 running out a stack IMO.

As to a practical purpose, in the winter it gets the exhaust up over the truck so you can actually see something in the mirrors. I think most people do it for looks and "cool factor" though.

I've got them on my truck that I pull the trailers with too get the black smoke up and away from the trailers. And I've got to say she's quiet in the cab, but been told she's not outside. Got a muffler off my Farmall 766 and it does a good job on my Ford with a 7.3L. David

Had a friend with a pickup so equipped. Pulled a large boat with it, claimed that the exhaust dirtied the boat, until he put on the stacks.

If I rember correctly back in the 50's and 60's when I started driving the more noise we could get a car to make the better is was. Didn't worry much about the police until we got near town. Now I don't like the soumd of a loud car or truck. I think it is a fad that will pass away in time, or the kids will grow up.

Aloha, Yeah, in the 50's I used to like the sound of the smitty's glass packs and all the rest of them noise makers. I remember splitting the exhaust manifold of a 6 cyl to make duals. Now (old age) I can't stand the sound of those rinky dink fat mufflers that the kids use.

37, you are right... even up into the 70's I guess I am getting old, but the sound of a 351 , with dual thrushes, sure sounds better than than a Honda with a Bumblebee pipe...

You mean those small cars with a "RICE TIP" or a "CHROME GO FASTER", I'm only 33 yrs. old and I hate those things. BUT I love the sound of a Chevy V8 with dual exhaust and turbo mufflers or glass packs.

In my state if they are at least 6 inch above the cab you don't have to have mufflers on them and that means a few extra HP

Missouri. In this area there a lot of big rigs with no mufflers and you can tell when one has the hammer down LOL.

PA claims they are going to start clamping down on that. Must have mufflers, heat sheilds on stacks, no cutouts, it's about time.

its all about "style" i personally on my pickup run from the turbo straight out the fender. (does have heat tape to prevent excessive cooling and fin cracking.) i have been to court on it being too loud in one of those safety lane deals and having no muffler (year wise i have to have no emissions) but the judge agreed with me a turbo is a sound deadning device and let me go) (plus he thought it was a ridiculous chare) ill run my 4840 up and down main street 2 in the morning if thye think my truck is loud) better yet go to where i work borrow the cement mixer w/a 318 detroit. the thing that has always p%issed me off is my sem i with stright 6 inch stacks really aint that loud. then they outlawed jake brakes(noise supposedly) but these rice burners (hondas) that sound like weed eaters on steroids are louder then my semi with jake break on. thats what makes me mad they let them run around but turn my jake brake on and its a ticket.

Seems like a teenage/early 20's thing here. Put on stacks with 4" straight pipes so they make more noise, look cool, and everyone can breathe the black smoke they make by chipping them up and adding rubbing alcohol to the fuel.

One of my students told me 'why'. 'B/c I'm 17 and I can..... ....', was his response. Mine thought back to him, looks like more money than sense to me. (OMG, I sound like my dad).

I"ve allways thought they were pretty ugly. Plus it takes up space in the bed. You can tell who uses their truck as a car instead of a truck. Having said that, the guy who used to rent my dad"s hay ground, has a 1995-96 Dodge 2500 w/ the Cummins. He custom made a flatbed with the chrome stacks coming up out of front corners of the bed. The only truck with stacks I like, yes it does sound good. Good lookin" truck. But he does use his truck, has a water tank on it right now. I"ve helped him load hay on it, close to 30 bales, if I remember right.

And then, ya have my '79 dodge 24' mini-motor home--440 engine BIG carburetor, big air filter, RUNS!! Took off stock muffler, installed a truck muffler, one about 5 ft. long, about 10 inches across, with a straight outlet pipe with one turn out to the side! That really cured the back pressure problem! Runs like a striped a## ape. altho- with gas at the price it is right now, i have to dance lightly on the "Go" pedal!
