Anyone had any experience with these? Local dealer has a new Durango on the lot with this engine, claims it is good for around 20 M.P.G.
The '01 Trailblazer we have now is getting to be a royal pain. 57,000 miles, one new tranny, a multitude of recalls, and right now it is in the shop for a twisted off shaft in the power steering pump, which caused my wife to lose control and put it in the ditch. She's fine, and no damage to the troubleblazer, but I think it is time.

hey rusty,
not trying to be biased here but i work for dodge and those hemis have been a good motor so far. between the durangos, 300's, magnums and the rams they have done real well. currently have two salesmen driving them and they're claiming 20-25 if you drive them nice. we have several ranchers around with the 2500 and 3500 rams with the hemis and they love them. it is hard to say what the future will bring though since it is a "newer" engine/design/application, but so far ok!

I saw a commercial on tv the other day and immediatly got to thinking about wear on 4cyls of the engine, must be the engine management syestem must alternate which 4 selected cylinders fire continuously otherwise you'd eventually end up with an engine that 4 cylinders would have worn out rings and the other 4 would be in alot better shape.

I guess I am a little concerned with the electronics that tell the engine when to run on 4 and when all 8 are needed. Local dealer supposedly has one on the lot, I think we need to go look.

I had a 1981 Cadillac Eldorado with the "8-6-4" system, which would run on 8, 6 or 4 cylinders, as power needs changed. Electromagnets held the valves open for the unused cylinders, and the computer-controlled fuel injection system shut off the fuel to those cylinders. It worked fine, but didn't help fuel economy, and was not as smooth in the changes as it probably would be with today's technology. Consequently, it only lasted one year, and I ended up having to junk the otherwise good car in the mid-90's because I could not find a replacement computer when mine went out. Be interesting to see if this new version catches on.

Dodge/Chrysler had the Dual displacement deal in the 5.7 cars in 05 and is avalible also in a 1/2 ton pickup for 06. GM offers it on several size engines in 06. In a magazine article about it in early 05 They talked about the old Cad 4-6-8 system and it's problems,as that is the first thing people compare the new chrysler/GM systems to. The engineer said the hardware part of the old Cad system was ok,but the computers of the day were way short of being able to make the system work as intended. They say it will work this time. I hope so,it has the chance to improve light throttle fuel economy by about 20%.

I'd imagine it would be a throttle position sensor that would determine when the other half would be needed.

I have a Chrysler 300 with the Hemi. It is a wonderful motor. It will only deactivate 4 cylinders at highway speeds and only if the engine speed has not changed for about a minute or so. Hard to tell though beacuse it is so smooth.

Is there a lockout feature for towing?
