A buyer calls me on sunday, says he will buy my tractor but can't get there till friday,so I tell him i'll hold it cause he's a couple states away.In the mean time someone else comes along but I can't sell it because i'm holding it for the first guy who said he would take it.Three days later the original buyer calls and says it will probably be next week before he can get away. Then a guy about 600 miles away says he'll take it and send me $500 down and pick it up in a couple weeks.A few days later I get the $500,but two months later the tractor is still here,he's called twice saying he'll be here in a couple days but doesn't show up.There's got to be a better way to handle this, maybe I'm to easy.

I think it is best to pay in full as a buyer, then at least you have time to make shipping arrangments, and save up some more money for that part of the deal if your funds are tight and the seller does not need it off the property asap. Knowing it is paid for and that you have time for pick up makes the deal a little more comfortable when it is a long distance one. Obviously it is best to pay in full and get what you bought on a truck asap, that is just common sense, but if you know or feel the seller is honest, ok with allowing storage, that is a really nice gesture. It is best to get a bill of sale and a receipt if immediate pick up is not going to happen. Problem is even when you have paid in full, anything that is left too long is subject to further use, ( who will know ? ) and what if someone else comes along and offers more money, takes it out from under you + how many other dubious scenarios can one think of ? Paying in full and getting it out of there is really a no brainer.

I think if other arrangments are to be made, like a deposit being sent and the tractor is held or anything of the sort, than the buyer needs to agree to terms that finalize the transaction by a certain time, whatever the case, you most certainly need to honor your word or the seller should be able to cancel the deal and move on to avoid any hassle. It seems a lot of sellers are great about storage and other things that may be helpful, the least a buyer can do is pay up within a reasonable time after a deposit is made, it's the ones that don't that create a hassle and ruin it for the guy who will do what he says he's going to do. The path of least resistance is best, it is also good to be nice to others, but there is always someone who will take advantage of it, that can make things complicated if you let it.

I'm easy too. I will hold something a few days without deposit. Once I get a deposit I consider the item sold. Have held tractors a year or so that way. Don't matter if the guy is next door or 3000 miles away, it happens.

I have to agree with Dave. First one with the money gets it BUT please hold it if I am on the road to your house.

In your case I would contact the guy that sent the $500. Tell him he does not need to pick it up until ????? ????? but full payment needs to be here in 7 days or you will loose your deposit.

I usually do not take deposits. I realize that it is hard to go several states over to pick something up so I will allow something to sit in my yard for a set time as long as payment has been made in full.

From the buyers point I understand "the first guy there with the money." That is ok unless I'm already on the road. Call me if you sell it before I leave but please hold it until I get there once I'm on the road. I haven't bought anything more than a days drive away.

Aloha, I wouldn't accept any down payments and the first one who shows up with the cash gets it. Been there.

Do you mean that if someone was coming like 5 hours drive, you wouldn't take a deposit and hold it until that person gets there, you would sell it to someone else? Man, if I were you, I'd hire a security firm or something. Craig

I hold tractors if someone is coming from a distance, but sometimes they call me a week in advance and want me to do it,and i won't.Usually the type of people who want to make a down payment are the ones who back out a few days later.

If a person was coming to see the item and it was a 5 hr drive, I would tell the person that if someone came by earlier with the cash, I would sell it to that person. A deposit is a pain because the buyer expects you to hold on to the item for who know's how long. They can make up all kinds of stories and I don't need that. What does this suppose to mean??? "Man, if I were you, I'd hire a security firm or something"

What I meant was that I would be afraid that someone would be awful darn friken mad traveling any distance just to find out I just sold the item while he was enroute. Had something recently happen were the seller raised the price $50 by the time I got there. Sorta funny marketing strategy, I"m trying to get a better price and he"s raising the price. In the end, I"m happy to get the item for the original agreed price. As far as getting a down payment for an item. Take the down payment, sent a date, and tell the person if he dosen"t pay in full by the agreed date, he forfeits the downpayment. Craig

Aloha, I always make it know that the item will be sold to the first one with the cash and even after them buying the item, I want them to remove the item asap. If it is a large item, I will give them a little time but not a lot. I have gotten into a situation where they paid for the item but didn't remove it for a couple of months and that is one of the reasons that I sold the item, to make space. Now to raise the price of the item after a quoted amount is a no, no to me. Some people will do that and tell you that he priced it wrong etc. because they know how much you wanted it and the distance you traveled. As far as somebody being po at me and want to beat me up or something most likely wouldn't happen because I live on an island so the distance and time wouldn't be too long. The bottom line to me is, I can't read the persons mind so to be fair, the first one wins.

When I bought the MTA it was from a guy two states away. He held it without deposit until I could get down there to look at it and that was AFTER I ticked him off trying to dicker him down.
Went to look at it, but got cold feet and walked away. Asked the guy to hold it thru the weekend while I thought about it. No problem....he did it. Must have been meant to be cause I bought it a week or so later. Seller was and still is one of my greatest sources of information. I don't think I would have been as patient as he was. Selling long distance is hard. Short term holds and no deposits would be my way of going.

1. First guy to meet your price and make payment in full owns the tractor. 2. Deposits have to have a shelf life after which it is yours for the screwing around you did holding the tractor provided you made that clear to the buyer.
3. Or don't accept deposits. 4.Accept that someone will not be happy.

Hi Ray, You would be the first easy for me. Those guys I have bought from are tough and independant as heck. If the money ain't there by a certin time there is no guarantee you will get it. "It's who shows up with the cash first". No one ever gives me any slack. I ain't sure I could be that tough cause I know how it feels on the buyers end. Jus have to toughen up I guess.

Good lock
