Good day to stay by the fire. I was just out for a minute to throw the cows a bait and several campers were going south on the highway. Sometimes it would be nice to fly away with them. How many of you guys go south to escape the cold?

Well....here in SE Iowa it was a balmy -8 this AM. Patiently waiting on new corn burner to arrive so we can set the temperature here in the office at "sahara". Going to Florida week after next for Xmas and to thaw out....maybe find some old iron while we're at it.

Nice log cabin you've got there. Looks like a nice spot to be on a cold winter day. We've had below zero weather every night for the past week here in northern Wisconsin. Has been only single digit highs. Today its up to 20 above already and we think its a heat wave.

I can't go much further south without hitting the gulf and I'm still cold. I sure couldn't handle the Nebraska winter. It's been in the 20s at night here and 40s high this week.

I like winter, I like ice fishing (in a warm shanty), I can get on the snowmobile trail system right from my garage, so I sled to a town for a burger and a beer which I enjoy a lot. The towns I sled to are around 50 miles by trail, so 100 mile day for lunch is a nice trip.
That said, I go to Florida for a two week rifle match (Orange Blossom Regional) at the end of Feb beginning of March, and is a great break. I need to get over to the Florida Flywheelers and check out their doings that are happening about the same time.
It is 0ºF right now, I heat with wood, the fire is real cozy. Here is a pic I just took, I appoligize for the quality, I had to lighten and touch it up with the software so it looks kind of crappy, the stove pipe shadow is just that, a shadow.

Howard: This going south in winter is something I've never done, however I must admit as I age I am thinking it may be the answer. The part I tend to resist is, I cant see much point in going unless one completely avoids most of the winter. I've seen so many folks head south for two weeks, while they are gone we enjoy a nice mild spell, and the very day they come home, back we go to sub zero weather. That alone has to be an asualt on one's carcass. Now if I'm going to do it, I've got to figure some way I can afford to stay until May. I've got it figured that I wouldn't mind hanging around until just after Christmas. Most places here in southern part of Canada, that would give 1 month of winter. That is enough for any 63 year old.

Of course you probably know my feelings on retired old farts. They should not be allowed to buy energy for heating or air conditioning. If all seniors across North America migrated like the birds, the demand for energy would drop substancially, maybe even enough, that the price may drop for everyone. Now I ask you, could that be all bad?

I came a little ways South for the season. Like to Melbourne. The weather is good but it is a little tough getting any work done on my old tractors.

My dad in central MN is hoping for a long spell of below zero temperatures and lots of snow to drive out the folks moving in and buying up the land. He figures a good "ol fashioned blizzard or two will finish them off. :)

I like to take a week or two right in the middle of winter...last week of Jan./first week of Feb., but me and momma also chase our daughter around, my son-in-law is a Navy pilot. Pensicola was a neat winter place, Corpus Christi was great, Meridian Miss. was O.K. but way too hot and humid for a northern boy like me in the summer. Now they are in Oceana, Virginia, not much better than here in the winter....think I'll brush up on my spanish!

If I were you, I'd warm up that quarter-moon windmill weight laying in the background, on the stove...and then take it to bed, and use it for a footwarmer!
I should talk...I believe it got up to 2 above here today. I'm getting tired of driving back and forth to town on sheer ice.

Cowman, sure a good looking ol' cook stove and with GREAT looking coffee pot....The ol' saying the "coffee's always on". That old stove brings back lots of memories, like, me and my dog sitting on the oven door in the middle of the nite keeping warm when my dad walked through the kitchen door home from WWII, Dec 1945....

It's cold, suppose to be down to -30 tonight with wind chill. Stories I'm hearing from up in North Central NE are bad. I guess the blizzard last week gave them 100+ mph winds with 12 inches of snow and snap the power line poles and not everyone is getting heat-hopefully they got back on the grid. Glad that M I bought had a block heater even though the antifreeze is changed.

Hurry and shut the gate!
Awww dang, it's way too late.
We have gotten a pretty fair infestation of em' right now. Head em' off up at the Arkansas river and we'll form a Deputation to releive you boys right afters Christmas.
I know it's a good place to pen em' up cuase there's a Cracker Barrel just on the top of the hill there in Pueblo Co.
All you have to do is get them old blue haired ladies in feeding frenzy and they are hard to get moving again.

My job requires me to go to Fla. for two weeks in Jan. Thing is I'd rather be skiing! Ain't that just the way things go. It's still a pleasant two weeks. I'm allowed to take my wife but she doesn't want to go!

Going south for the winter isn't a bad idea, especially right now. Two things stopping me, can't bring my toys with me, and can't afford to go anyhow.
