My wife & I have recently retired and have purchased a farm in the area of east central Kansas. We haven’t moved there yet but will soon. I’m asking your advice.
The farm is 160 acres of which 120 are tillable with the balance in pasture & yard with some out buildings.
I have purchased the following equipment to farm it. 8n tractor because my neighbor told me they are really good so he sold me his for only 4300 dollars.
I’d like to run it on bio-diesel to be environmentally friendly.
I’ve also purchased a 4-16 plow, a 15 foot bush cutter and 10ft harrow disk for the tractor. I’m planning to raise lima beans, sugar cane and pigmy goats. A John Deere 9650 combine for the lima beans and the sugar cane. Is sugar cane difficult to combine?
One of my new neighbors said it is?
The tractor does need some work because I think I ran it out of oil just running around the yard. Where do you check the oil on these things and can I use the same oil I use in my (2)Escalades.
I also need advice on a trailer for the goats and crops to pull behind the Escalade as I will have to pick them up in Kansas City. I also need to know what to wear when farming. I don’t want to look dumb but, fit in.
Thanks for your assistance. Californian to be farmer.

Your not going to be able to use that 4-16 plow on your 8N right away until you special order that oil Specter mentioned. Tractor Supply in Olathe should stock a made in china hitch that will fit on one of your Escalades. That way you can work your ground this weekend before the 10 inches of snow we got melts and be warm in the caddy. Thats reminds me of another thing you should look into, a cab for your 8n.

I can't believe all these farmers failed to mention you will need a hellicopter to pollinate your sugar cane, it would also help to have a turbo thrush on stand-by to spray all your acreage

Mr. Dreamer;
I applaud you in your efforts to this point, but it is apparent that you will need some additional help in your farming plan.
I'm sure by contacting the organization below, they will be more than willing to guide you to a productive and rewarding fulfillment of your goal.
A short video or film of your operation might help. In fact it could possibly lead to yet another life altering change.

Hey Dreamer: what ya been smokin', sounds like some righteous stuff. If you can grow that on your farm, you will make a fortune, even with an 8N doing the tillage. :-)

Geez Cali-dreamer... Sounds like you've got your foot in the right direction. You might want to stop by your local house of worship before you leave to make sure God has ordainded you to be a farmer. Thats the way I was told to do it - so far the jury is out!

BTW...this was the best laugh I had all day...an 8n pulling 4-16.....lol...

Hold on a minute, I have to get back in my chair, catch my breath, and wipe the tears off my face...

Ah, there. First of all, you have to tell us how you got the rearend of that 8N to handle the power of that big Cat engine you must have put in there.

Now, as to check the oil. You have to find a small punch, and a really big hammer. Put a hole in the oilpan at about the mark where it meets the engine block. If oil comes out, you have enough oil in there.

Ah, yes, the type of oil you have to put in. You need Ultra-duty lithium strontium chromate oil. I have some, but I can't get it to you right now. My sled dogs are sick. Also there is another 2 week blizzard coming up here in Canada.

You can run biodiesel in your combine, but you have to be careful not to let it sit in your tank for too long. It will start sprouting in there, you know, and clog up your fuel lines.

For clothing, you have to find a pair of dusty and patched overalls, a faded plaid shirt, and a wheat stem dangling from the corner of your mouth. Oh yes, and don't forget the ubiquitous (look that up in your dictionary!) ballcap from the local feedmill.

Let us know how it goes!

the 8N will be fine with all that equipment, but the bio-diesel will not work the 8N is a gasoline motor, and to get it to use the equipment you have you are going to have to find someway to install a ford 460 cid. motor and run nitrous..you will probably need to install ROPS when you kick the PTO in on that big of a bush hog it will probably turn the tractor over instead of the pto. you may consider trying to plow with those goats..

i think you should try growing rice in ks. since its so flat, water wont run off. may have to import water, but since youre moving from ca you may be able to bring some with you. as far as the 8n go for it, but need to order a windmill for it.

Here's a few words of advice from someone who knows. First, check with GM, I think the Escalade warranty is void if you get any feathers or chaf inside the vehicle. Then, put your Ford N on ebay and "sell it now" for maybe 8 grand, you can almost double your money overnight. Lastly, there are a lot of Essex Tri Directionals out there in California that a guy can pick up for a song. I would suggest the ETD "Stubble Jumper" model for good fuel economy on that bio-whateveritis fuel you plan to use. Do a quick tuneup on it and grow pineapples, they are an up-and-coming crop up in the Yukon (my Uncle Festus Grimes farms them) near Jakes Corner so I don't see why a guy couldn't pull it off in California. Good luck with your venture and ignore all those ignoramus' below that are jerking your chain. You will make out just fine.

I trust you plan to have fun and hope to make a little money at this venture. You will surely have fun if you are very careful. Farming in a very dangerous profession so please don't go at it light hearted thinking it is all fun & games. It only takes a second to lose and arm, hand, leg or life. Anyway, it is a great life! If you haven't already, you may want to contact vegetable packing plants as lots of them contract for farmers to raise veggies for them. Use that 8n for yard and get yourself like a nice old Farmall 806, 1206, 1066 or such for the big field work. Most of all, have fun!

by golly, I do exactly that in upstate NY

double crop-plant the beans in with the sugar cane and let those pigmy goats graze under that cane, keeps the weeds down plus fertilizes that cane

not sure what an 8n is but I use a D-6, the cane makes excellent ethanol for use in the D-6 plus comes in handy for xmas parties too

good luck. the 8n will be fine. the bio diesel will work as long as you buy the pink type. you will need to special order the oil for it and don't neglect the windshield wipers on it also. you will need the high clearence type combine or else the sugar cane will just clog up. not sure why you bought the 15 ft mower as with a 8n i would think a 20 ft would be the smallest you would want to use.

If you're serious and not just haveing some fun with us here, check back archives for here, using tractor, Kountry life, Implement Alley. Try going to farm area for a couple years first and just rent the tillable acreage at market rate as county bankers say is fair. Then check what is grown in the area. You seem to be getting in trouble right now. At least renting will reduce loss. RN

Best advice for you is to plant a "FOR SALE" sign on your 160 acres.

Naw, you only need 20 acres to grow a good crop of for sale signs. The rest can be no trespassing, no hunting, for rent, wanted, for hire, etc etc... The bigger ones you can get a good penny for, but ya gotta fertilize them real heavy. I tried planting my 1600 once and then the 285, but that didn't work. All they got was muddy. Well if your telling the truth then I'm soory to here how you have been used by others. 8N for that price, well you got took by at least $1500 if not $2000. 4 bottom behind and N would be like you tring to pull a plow behind your car, isn't going to happen. Same with the brush hog. 8N is about 23 HP and for a 4 bottom plow you need at least 50HP as for the hog the same way. Kansas is wheat country by the way.
