My daughter gave me a new camera for CHRISTMAS and guess what. The daxxm software that came with it requires more ram than my 1998 computer has. Mine has 96 mb and the camera needs 132mb. Looks like time to upgrade some how. Its a good computer that has never given me any problems.

Some of the new digital cameras can be set to start the software when they are plugged in or to be seen as an removeable drive. If yours can be set to be seen as a removeable drive you will be able to get your pictures and will not need the extra memory. That is the way I use mine plus I also have a card reader.

The software that came with my camera is BLOATED, and simply sucks. It even installed Apple Quicktime, which insisted on loading every time the computer was "booted". (If I wanted Apple, I'd have bought an Apple!)

Instead of using a USB cable to connect the camera and 'puter, I simply got a memory card reader ($25.00).

Remove memory card from camera, insert in card reader, (which the 'puter sees as another disc drive), and you can then preview the photos in thumbnail version, and save the ones you want to the harddrive, and then open and edit them with whatever photo software you already use.

The only drawback to this would be if you wanted to take videoclips with the camera, and then edit them, you'd need the camera software, or other video editing program.

Memory is cheap now,you should be able to replace your existing ram chip with a new 256 mb chip for about $20-30. If you have an unused slot, add another for 512 mb.Memory is cheap and makes an old computer perk up a bunch.

Many older operating systems and mother boards do not support expanded memory. Case and point - my old Windows 98 operating system supported less than 128 megs of memory. It would ignore any amount over that. And my old Acer Pentium 75 mother board would only support a whopping 48 megs of memory.

My suggestion is to buy a new computer. I got my High School graduated son a new Dell 3 mhrz Pentium 4 with H/T technology, 1 gig of ram, 40 gig hard drive, CDR and DVD drive, flat panel 17" monitor, and the normal accessories for $400 shipped - a pretty beefy setup for college. You can go much lower than that and still have a very nice machine for around $200 if you reuse your monitor, keyboard, and mouse - loaded with Windows XP no less. I posted a link to Dells website - their entry level system now is $299 (Christmas), but that comes with the monitor and such, but will give you an idea of what you are looking at. They run very good specials from time to time, that is how I got mine. Keep an eye on slickdeals.net for great specials.

Good luck,
Dan

You may run into the smae problem I did. I expanded the meory in my computer, but the processor was so slow I couldn"t handle a very high resolution picture. I ended up getting a new computer and camera both at the smae time to solve the problem.
