The ac clutch locked up on my 99 f-250 5.4L gas motor pickup. I'm buying lumber and steel trusses ect. to build a pole barn and don't want to spend 3 or 4 hundred on a new clutch and compressor (I think comp. may be shot as well) till spring if I can help it. Wonder if I can buy a non air belt and get by for a while, will routing be the same as ac equipped truck with exception of compressor?

Clutch bearings are not hard to replace.

My brother in law has his 99 for sale, sounds like a twin to the one you are looking at, but his is cheaper. Interested?

Aloha, I would agree that a used compressor would get you going until it is fixed permanently. If you can't get one, you could probably make an idler pulley. As far as the non air belt, you would probably have to see how the original belt is routed to see if it would work. The non air belt may be shorter or it may be the same length as the air belt because of an idler pulley in place of the compressor.

Mahalo,

How are you driving it now? Personally, I'd fix it because of the defroster working 10 times better. But you could got to the local auto parts store and try the non ac belt and see if it works.

What I did once was put on a non-working compresser that still had a good bearing. I think I gave about $25 at the junkyard

When I buy a new belt I am always asked does it have air. Maybe you could just take the compressor out and buy the belt for a non air setup. Stan

You should be able to disable the clutch for the AC unit by disconnecting the wire lead to it. This will allow the pulley to turn but the AC compressor will not run. Keep in mind your defrost system will not work as well with your AC not working.
