Ok guys, I have decided on a Ford. But now, which Ford. The 53 Jubilee has power steering but needs paint, possibly tires and some other little things. The 601 looks VERY good, new tire, new paint, I mean it looks excellent. Except, the guy said the previous owner broke a tooth off a gear in the trans. How hard is that to fix. I am a mechanic by trade, so I guess I am asking are the parts expensive or hard to come by? Here's the two in a nutshell....
53 Golden Jubilee--$2300.00, ps, 3pt, needs paint, tires
54 601--2800.00, no ps, 3pt, excellent, needs a gear in trans.
Thakns again guys for all your help.
John

This is coming from a guy who has a 54 NAA, so I may be biased... Get the NAA.

Power steering is a $1000 item, and you are already ahead based on price. The NAA and the 601 share the same engine, so horsepower is not an issue. I would MUCH rather replace the rear tires than a gear in the tranny, and cost would be similar. It is true that the NAA originally came with the vane style hydraulic pump - but so did the 601. Most every NAA I have seen has already been converted to the piston style, it is rare to find one that has not. Parts are about the same, but you will have an easier time finding NAA parts as many are the same as the 8N tractor.

As far as how easy to work on, check out my website below and see what I did with my 54 NAA - and I AM NOT a mechanic by trade.

Good luck,
Dan

I HAVE A JUBILEE WITHOUT P/S, AND IT DOES A FINE JOB. OF COURSE , I DON,T HAVE A LOADER EITHER, BUT FOR GENERAL WORK, IT,S HARD TO BEAT, AND I,M A FARMALL LOVER. I WOULDN,T TAKE $2300.00 FOR MINE, AND IT,S JUST AVERAGE.

A 54 would be a NAA same as the Jubile and a 601 would be a 57 or later.
The Jubile had the vane hydraulic pump and by the 601 the pumps were the better piston type.
The 601 could be 4 speed, 5 speed, 5 speed with LIVE PTO, or the dreaded SOS transmission.
If you ever want to put a remote hydraulic valve on they are expensive and hard to come by for the Jubile. The later valves while expensive are readily available. Just some thoughts for you to consider.

Personally, the ps is worth it's weight in gold provided it works properly and doesn't leak. A new add on kit for the 601 is about $1200. The only thing with the jubilee is keeping the rear hubs tight, they have a tendency of working loose when not torqued down to I think is 350 foot pounds. Other than that they are they same tractor- hp, trans, everything. If you ever put a loader on, the ps shines. I picked up 800 lbs. with the loader on my 861 turned the wheel with 1 finger, ps of coarse.

Actually, from the trans back the NAA in more like the 8N than the 601.
