you mentioned your control cam in your hydro was sloppy. Did you check this out or did you try checking the other board for info on that cam like I sujested? It should not be sloppy.

Mornin' Leroy,

An IH guy tells me that they are normally sloppy like that when they are shut off. Word is that they use the hydraulic pressure to tighten 'em up while running.

Couldn't find anything else wrong so I've got 'er all throwed back together on that bottom end and will try to tear into that upper control valve this afternoon.

I've had lots of guys telling me that the 'A' and 'B' capsules are a common difficulity on these things and that an o-ring leak at capsule "A" will cause these exact symptoms.

Also, if someone somewhere along the line has switched the two (maybe to test 'er?), it will be weak in forward too, as the two capsules "look" alike but are completely different in their oil flow.

I just can't imagine that the problem is anything major with this old cow. I mean that thing is a total monster when in reverse; just whimpy in forward.

Thanks for the hollar,

Allan

Just got back from my CIH dealer. When I was finally able to talk to the service manager, he suspected one of two possibilities. The easy check was to interchange the forward and reverse capsules. If this provides no improvement, he then suggested that the high pressure forward pump did not have proper pressure. It could be the pump, or the valve/relief valve bypassing pressure. It also could be the pump itself. (he hopes not...$$$) A pressure test is required, going in the diagonostic order as perscribed in the service manual. If the pressure is somewhat below minimum, and the pressure and relief valves are PERFECT, ( ie no scratches etc. on O-rings..) sometimes a couple of oil and filter changes/flushes will provide satisfactory performance in the interm. It is assumed that HY-TRAN oil is used. If a pressure test reveals unacceptable pressure and the valves etc are good, than the best answer is an experienced garage that does meticulas (sp) work is required. When Harvester assembled Hydros, cleanliness was extremely important. The local shop has a couple of dividers in it, and they clean and then pressurize the room prior to aseembly. Hope that this answers some points and is able to steer you in the proper direction. The shop here closes now until January 4th, so happy finding proper pressure!!!..... . QR

Thanks for the help Red.

Yep, I'm just hopin' that the charge pump is okay 'cause if it's not, that means splittin' the darned tractor. :>(

I stopped at the IH store and they want $300 for those two little capsules. I'm gonna yank 'em and look first 'fore I buy. :>)

Also,

Another thing that has me "suspect" of a reversal of the capsules is that de-acceleration thing.

When going forward, if I just barley pull back on the stick just a little, the darned thing absolutely slides the tires and "yanks" the tractor to slow 'er down.

Seems like it ought to be a little more "gentle" on the 'whoa' part. :>(

Dunno, I'm gonna find that bear, even if it takes me all winter. :>)

Well I assume (!!) that you know that my local CIH garage has been in existance since 1942. The boys here would be proud to include you in their customer list. Why if you brought your tractor to them for an overhaul you would be eligible for the winter repair discount, the new customer discount, and the discount on Canadian funds. You might even get lucky and be able to pay in Quebec Currency. This country is having an election on the 23rd of January. Might be an interesting election night. Come to think of it at their other garage there is a 312 in the used parts section. Then you would make a real horse out of your 70. A number of years ago these boys put a 436 in a 766. Then they rebuilt the 360 and it went into a 666 Hydro. It could really blow snow and silage (until the PTO cooked-that's why they invented mechanics !! ). Anyway it sounds as though you are on the proper trail towards properly repairing the tractor (as well as increasing your gray matter knowledge bank-to the detriment of the other bank. Good wrenching and Merry Christmas. From QR and the boys at Equipment Marsan Inc.
