For those who have not seen Biltmore house, here is a pic of it. The picture and the pics on their web page at biltmore.com don't really do justice to it. Its the largest private residence in the US. Estate once had 125k acres with 1200 devoted to farming, a dairy, cropland, etc. The guy who built it inherited his money and spent much of it on this place. As valuable as the house is, the furnishings and art work are more valuable.

We have a place pretty much in the same style up here, but the local authorities would like nothing better than to knock it down, but that would cost $5million and they can't afford it. The State will sooner or later provide the funding to take it down.

I've been to Biltmore a couple of times. In fact, my wife and I visited it on our honeymoon. It is impressive. I remember that the admission fees are pretty steep, but Biltmore doesn't receive a nickle of public money (unlike San Simeon, for example).

I have been down there at least once a year for the past eight or ten years. My wife loves the winery. She always comes back with a truck full of the stuff. Seems Vanderbilt was a railroad guru who was competing with the Hurst's in California to see who could have the biggest and best. Vanderbilt actually ran a railroad into his estate to cart the supplies necessary to build the place. In addition, he had a ship line that would trade around the world for the furnishings and artwork in the house. He was one of the first outside of New York to have refrigeration, a commercial size laundry complete with dryers, and electricity. When he first brought electricity to the area, he actually sold it to the city of Ashville for a while, as the story goes. The house has a swimming pool in the basement, an exercise room and a bowling alley. He made his servants wear different colored uniforms designating which floor they were to work on. They were not allowed to leave that floor. Everything was sent around the house by dumbwaiters. By the way, while you are in Ashville, check out the Grove Park Inn. It is equally impressive. It was built by a guy who made his living selling snake oil. He hauled large rocks down the mountain on 7 or 8 hay trailers towed behind an old model A. There is a picture of the old car towing the trailers down the montain. The picture is on the wall in the restaurant located just across the street from the hotel. Quite a place. You will want to stay at a local no-tell motel though, as rates at either the Biltmore or the Grove Part are over $200 per night, depending on what time of the year you visit. Thought about making an offer on the place but the electric bill has got to be outrageous!!! LOL!

Saw it years ago back in the 70's when I was a kid but I don't really remember anything but the fact we saw it. I hope to get back in the next year or two since Mom and Dad had the opportunity to go again a couple of years back. They both really enjoyed it. Dad said it's well worth the extra money to take the side tours that take you down into the basement to the old electrical panels, etc. He the grounds, the art, the antiques, etc were all interesting and pretty in their own right but it was things like the old panels that really made things really interesting for your typical male.

Howdy,

The neatest part of the house is the indoor bowling alley. Dad, mom, my sister, and I went to see it while on a trip in the Smokies back in 1997. It rained that day so we didn"t get to see much of the grounds. Matter of fact, I had my picture taken by one of those big flower pots outside the main entrance. God bless.

Gary, It is located in Ashville, NC, just o
ff I 40 east. Looking on mapquest.com is the best way to get directions, I often get confused when going there myself. Yes, it's open to the public for a price. The descendents who own it don't live in that house but another nice large normal house on the estate. Check on their website, biltmore.com for prices.

The man who built this house was the LEAST wealthy of the Vanderbilt sons.

Sad how the poorest son had to live, isn't it?

He was a vanderbuilt, had several of these houses
in different countries.I think he had 70 servants in this one. They dug irrigation ditches by hand and lined them with lumber so they wouldn"t loose any water.

Bill,

They had a generator powered by a big hit and miss engine at first. There was a discussion with Thomas Edison about whether to use AC or DC so they wired it for both. On regular commercial power now.
