Are my tractor wheel bearings going bad?

Deere 830, 3cyl 35 hp diesel. It was made in the early 70's and has about 3000 hours.

When I drive it, I hear/feel a clunk coming from the left hub. It seems to make that clunk one time for every one rotation of the tire. It is intermittant. It might do it for a few seconds, and then stop for a minute.

If it's not the bearings, what else could it be?

Check bolts around outer part of wheel that bolt center disk. I've seen them get loose a clunk. Tx Jim

Yep, sounds like a wheel bearing. Sounds like theres grit in there doesn't it? and makes all kinds of not very nice sounds. Yep you definatly want to change that before you use it again because the wheel will completely fall off when your driving it

Could be a few things, but you need to check it before you use it again. Its not fun to have a wheel fall off when your in the middle of no place, been there done that before. Its probably the bearing but it could also be a couple broken lug stud. Jack it up and turn the wheeel by hand and see how it feels. It should spin easy and not hang up or wobble any.

Went home for lunch, all the lug studs were snug. I went ahead and removed them, cleaned off the threads with a wire wire brush, then put them back in with Loctite. This evening I'll jack it up and see how freely it rotates.

"If it"s not the bearings, what else could it be?"

"You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel..."

Sorry. That just popped into my mind when I read that.

Neighbours Ford 5000 wheel disc loosened without his notice. Wore the disc and the rim all to bits. Being the farmer he is he got me to torch the old bolts off so he could tighter up new ones.

I told him he should get me to weld a bit more on the disc ears where they wore off but he knew better. I suspect he will find the new bolts don't stay tight either.
