As some of you are aware I've been looking at some IH hydro tractors to use for transplanting. I've gone to see 2. Both were gas models (Hydro 70 and a 656 hydro). Neither would start when I was there. The 70 is now running but I was told it has some problem with the manifold or gasket. The 656 I went to see was at a dealership I often deal with and have really gotten good service from them. It was sitting outside with the gas off. When they tried to start it they turned the gas on and it flooded almost immediately. They couldn't get it to fire even after turning the gas off. They told me those old updraft carburators flood easily and if I want to hear it run to let them know a day ahead and they would pull it inside and get it started. I don't think I want to mess with a tractor that is that hard to start. In all fairness though it was cold and damp and it had been sitting outside. My question is do you think it is carburator design (my case 630 and 200 are both updrafts and they will start ok) or does the carb just need rebuilt or should I just assume I'm not supposed to buy a gas hydro at this time. Price was good on both but the 656 was really good. Thanks for your thoughts.

Phil
PS
I'm posting this on both the IH and Tractor Talk boards.

I'd worry way more about the shape of the hydro than the carb - or even the engine. The hydro is the $$$$ part that is the weak link.

Speaking of tractors laid up for a couple of months during winter, anybody out there figured what will keep rodents from building nests down in the innards?. Seems to happen every winter and takes compressed air to get all feathers etc out.
Opened up the Ford hood to put StaBil in gas tank and found a couple of gallons of mouse nest....derned pests. Thanks for any advice.

The carb isn't a big deal. The dealer probably just doesn't want to put money out on it unless he's got it sold. Give them the days notice, then go try her out.... See what else is wrong, and then discuss a price to have it fixed. You deal with them fairly often.... presumably you know and trust them....
I'm no IH expert, but I'd expect that thing to fire right up and run strong if it was tuned properly.... and this one sounds like it needs a little tuning..... no biggie.

Those carbs are really quite good. If the tractor is used regularly, a rebuild kit in her will last for years. Like me, if it sits for days/weeks on end sometimes you might have to tap it upside with a hammer to dislodge the needle from the seat.

Phil,

Don't get so discouraged; ya gotta remember that these old things are neigh on 30 years old. There are going to be a few issues.

If the 656 is the best deal and it is coming from your dealer, he should make it right before you buy.

Another thing I'm finding out is that these old gas tractors have one thing in common with the diesels: they don't like to set around idle and they don't like to just putz around doing very light chores. They need to work to stay in shape (like all of us). :>)

The Hydro 70 and the 656 are both the same darned tractor; 'bout the only differences are the grill, the build date and the decals.

Way too many up-draft carburetors in use for it to be a design flaw. I'll bet that she just needs a good cleaning, a new needle valve and seat, and a gasket. She'll be good to go.

I think you would consider this to be a fairly normal problem with tractors that have set for a couple or 3 months with out being started and run a while, especially in pretty cold weather. I also think you would find that if they were started and ran for a little while even once a week, they would start up much better. A carb overhaul kit might help things out also. A bad manifold gasket can also make it really hard for a cold dry engine to suck it"s first mouthfull of gas into those cylinders to light off that first fire.
