I did as you said ran the battery stud to the number 2, and then you said the number one goes to the coil side of the ignition switch? and also if the battery were to be connected to the stud, what kind of readings should i get out of the number 1 outlet? if any.. thanks

Andy,

I had to scatch my head there, for a moment, as to what you are working with, finally remembered, it's a Wisconsin.

If the engine uses a true 12-Volt coil, NO external ballast resistor is needed. However, if you are unsure if it originally used a resistor, or not, and it's burning points, the simplest "fix" is to get a universal 12-Volt coil that is specifically labelled "NO external resistor required".

NAPA has a reasonably priced true 12-Volt coil, # IC14SB.

If you do not have a NAPA nearby, any auto supply store should be able to cross that number to what they're pushing.

You can email me, if you have any other questions.

With the switch off you should get zero, with the switch on you should have battery voltage or close to it. The #1 terminal is the excite wire for the alternator, if it doesn't get voltge it will not let the alternator turn on so to speak

I don't understand your concern about frying the points and coil ? You connect the #1 alternator exciter wire with it's inline diode or indicator light to the same ignition switch terminal as the coil. You do not modify the original switch to coil,or coil to distributor wiring,so the alternator conversion will have no effect on the ignition system.
