Trying to fix my wife's vehicle. Already did a brake job--both front pads and rear shoes. Drums and rotors clean. After using the vehicle for a couple of months I drove it one day and noticed the rear brakes tend to "stick" a low speeds and will lock up momentarily at slow speeds when its raining. Some have told me to look for ABS speed sensor problems--maybe the air gap in the sensor postition is too great. I've never worked on ABS brake systems so can anyone shed some light on this? Maybe a dumb question, but where is the ABS speed sensor and how can this thing be troubleshooted?

Thanks

I would check with a dealership on any ABS recalls for sure. But I know for a fact that you may need new rear pistons for your brum brakes. I have a friend that works at our local Chevy dealership and he stated the other day that this was a problem. It has something to do with the pistons that they used at the factory, but after they put a set of new ones on, the problem disapears.

Kevin,

That really sounds like you have something mechanically wrong with the rear brakes; are you sure you put the primary shoes on the front? Did you install the automatic adjusters correctly?

Just don't think the ABS system can be your problem.

Allan,

That's a good question and I wondered about the shoes having two different thicknesses. The thicker shoes are installed on the aft side. It seems like the mounting holes only allowed that position but I do remember wondering if I had them reversed--that is should the thicker shoes have been on the front side??

Thanks for the reply and the help. I've been out of pocket lately--still doing hurricane work here and in Mississippi.

My 2000 silverado has a recall on brakes. They might have a condition permitting corrosion to occur between the front/hub bearing and wheel speed sensor. This corrosion may cause an unwanted anti-lock brake activation. To check on recall on your vehicle,www.gm.com/recall and enter your 17 character vin number

I THINK most of the ABS issues were in the front, but I'm sure someone else will chime in about that, plus, I would think, you'd be seeing an ABS light if that was the problem.

Any time your rear drum brakes are locking up, the first thing I'd do is inspect them for oil from leaky rear wheel seals.

It seems counter-intuitive, but oil on the brakes that collects some dirt will cause the brakes to lock, and slide the tires.

Bob,

That's what I was "hoping" to find when this problem came up but I couldn't find any sign of leakage of either the brake cylinders or the axle seals. Just plenty of dry brake dust.

Thanks.

1st off. what year is it? Late 90's GM trucks have a recall on the ABS sensor brackets rusting and causing issues. IF you have ABS You should be getting the ABS light on if there is a problem. IF you have ABS you will see a set of wires going down to the wheels near the hub. You might also see what looks like a gear that the sensor picks up weather the wheel is lockedup or not. I don't know how GM did the ABS on them. My 1st thought is you have the drums adjusted a bit too tight causing them to "lockup" on wet roads. Depending on age and mileage your wheel cylinders could be sticking a bit too causing them to not release and "stick". With ABS though I'd REALLY suggest you seek help from your friendly GM dealer. At least ask some questions from the service manager. Its not worth loosing your brakes. Good luck and be safe.

INCase,

I thought I mentioned that it was a '95. Its a late production "95 diesel as there were only 7 available in the US when we bought this one.

I'll take another look but I didn't see any wires coming down to the drum area and I've never seen an ABS light show up on the dash.

I do have the shoes adjusted fairly tight but they don't rub when rolling down the road. I had so much pedal even after bleeding the brakes, I felt the need to adjust the shoes as close as possible to help reduce pedal distance.

I haven't considered the brake cylinders sticking--this machine has over 200K on it with original cylinders. Maybe I should replace those anyway for good measure.

Thanks for the help.
