I have a need for a tractor but don't have a lot to spend. I am selling a small fishing boat I don't use much to finance part of it.

I have a few rent houses and one is on 2 acres. So what I would be using it for is:
shredding (brush hogging?)
box blade for smoothing out some dirt I am buying to fill in low spots
occaisional pulling of small trees
would like a tractor that I could get a front end loader for later...
I don't care how ugly or old it is, long as it will do some "occaisional" work for me.
I would probably use it once a month
So my questions:
1) Are there any $2,000 (+/-) tractors out there that can do all of that?
2) What should I be looking for (models etc)?
3) What HP tractor should I be looking for?
4) If my $2K is not enough, how much will I have to spend?

Any help is appreciated.
Chris

Oh ya, and it would have to fit on my 16' lowboy bumper pull utility trailer. I don't want something so huge that I would need a gooseneck trailer.

Regarding your trailer - their are a lot of variables. Home Depot specials are several hundred lbs to 2,500 GVW. Heavy duty name brand dual axle 16' trailers with brakes start at 7,000# then go to 9,999# and some have 12,000# trailers. No brakes and it dropps onto the 2,000 - 3,000# range. Goosenecks become popular at just over 10,000#. You also have driver license issues at 10,000# that has been the subject of much debate. Remember it's not what you can pull but what you can stop.

Before I sold it I would transport my 686 on a 9,998# pumper pull pipe trailer - it had 6,000# axles and 15" radial tires with the empty weight aroung 1,900# and most important all 4 wheels had electric brakes. I tied it down with grade 70 transport chain - 4 points and binders on the front 2. I figure the capacity of the trailer was about 8,000# and the tractor was just over 7,000#'s that went to 8,000# with the plow.

If I added a plow, front weights and fluid in the rear tires I'd be over capacity and NOT SAFE. So I didn't add fluid and took off the front weights when transporting

I think an M is around 5,000# to 6,000# and the Ford 801 less.

Take a look at your registration to determine the weight you can safely pull.

One last comment most trailers are 78" wide and most tractors are setup for 34" rows that means the width from outside tire to ourside tire is 80+" for 12 inch tires. You might need to move in the tires to 30" row spacing (72" overall width)to get it on your trailer unless it's a deckover.

Hope this helps

In your price range to do what you want I'd suggest a farmall M with an aftermarket 3point hitch. For a little more you can get into the utility ractors like the Ford 801 or simular massy ferguson. The M will do better pulling out stumps and the 801 better with the brushhog and box blade. The M and 801 are rugged tractors that can take some abuse like stump pulling. The Oliver 77 might also be a good choice. JD's will run higher because everone likes to restore them.

Your price range will definatly put you into an older tractor that most likely will not have a live PTO or power steering. Although you can equip both with loaders their not going to be as easy to use or fast as a current loader tractor.

I'd say you'd probably be looking for a 5' bush hog and maybe the same for a box scraper? I'd say you'd start around nothing below 35HP and up to 50HP would be good. Couldn't tell you how much your trailer would hold. but one you get a loader on them . . . they're a bit heavier then what most people think. I don't know what everyone else would suggest, but a CASE 430 is a good, strong, suitable first tractor. Paul

Theres a good number of tractors that will fit your bill. You want something with 3 point of some type of 3 point. Depending on how hilly it is you might be able to get by with a trike type which would be cheaper. Shoot I have 2 or 3 tractors that would probably fit your bill and is around your price range. E-mail is open by the way

What do you want to pull on that trailer? How big of a box blade? I would say 40 to 50 Horsepower would be sufficient. It depends though. You might have to up your price a bit to . You will find what you want though if you keep looking. By the way will you E-mail me some information on that fishing boat? I might be interested.
