Hello people, just wondering where is the best place to buy a new or remanufactured starter for a cat 3208 in a white 4-150? When it gets hot it just wants to click, clack, etc. I replaced the solenoid and that was about $150 dollars and it was bad but the tractor still does it. The batteries seem ok as does the alternator. If you let is set for a while it will usually take off again. The motor is running well and is staying cool. Just one of those annoying problems I want to get fixed before it hits the fields in a couple of weeks. I hate something that wont start when you shut it off. Huge pet peeve of mine and probably everybody else too! I have heard maybe Napa has them for a pretty good price. Anybody have to do this that can help? Thanks!

It seems like the power is getting to the solenoid but it's not turning the starter like the starter has a short that is just using all th e batteries juice but not turning over. I am thinking now it must be brushes in the starter or maybe bearings in the starter are bad and when they heat up they sieze. I know the motor is not that tight because I can roll it a little by hand when the problem is occuring by grabbing the fan and cranking it a little. As far as finding them in the junkyard I drive by Worthingtons every day and it is mostly green, red, and orange in there. I think he has two 4-180's that look like they were drove in there. Actually I think that Silver Bullet tractor that beats everybody in tractor pulling every day is using a 3208 if I am not correct. They must be doing something right with them. Thanks for the help People.

Had aField Queen forage choper long time ago that had aCat v/8 that would start cold an when hot wouldnt. You can turn large washer an have start till left to cool somewhat. Had a recond engine an after checking con rod bearings found they were too tight!!! an starter could not turn engine. Also had Cat955 that would not start. All that needed to be done was take solenoid apart an clean COROSION on parts . You can also do this on Delco starters used on Case such as 830- 930 an others

Messed up my message Part about washer should be at end. Ment to say you can take solenoid apart an turn washer to new side an also i contact screw -other one you just clean . Just be careful as i bolt is soldered to rear of solenoid an you have to push back as you remove front.

3208 starters are plentiful at bone yards that have blown up!

You could have a bad battery. Check that out, all cables and connections, etc before you condemn the starter. If it is bad, take it to a good local rebuilder, unless you know that you can get a good rebuild from a truck supply. The last starter I priced through Cat was nearly a grand rebuilt, and over 2 grand new.... although that was a 24 volt starter. If you look closely at the starter you'll probably find that it's a Delco 42MT or something like that, and is fairly common. Truck parts supplier should get one, or at least the parts to rebuild one. HTH.

First of why did you change the solenoid? If it because you heard it go click-click I would guess you have a connection problem!. I have to check the boy's John Deere for the sam problem. Do you have a voltmeter? Have you check the battery voltage when the problem occurs and then checked the voltage at the starter? HAve you checked the voltage at the starter to start with? How many hours are on the starter? Do you have anyone close by that works on heavy equipment starters?Sounds to me you need to make some fundamental tests first! Have you had the starter off and looked inside? Just asking.

I have not checked the battery voltage yet. I think one battery is new and one is a few years old. I actually think one may be getting bad. All the cables are brand new and are very heavy duty all the way to the starter. The connections are all perfect. It is all new stuff except the starter itself. I changed the solenoid because it was ruined inside. The wires were broken off the contacts. It now has a nice new one. The only thing I have not done is physically pull the starter itself. I don't know the history of the starter. It could very well be original and it has about 4600 hours on the tractor. I am quite sure it will be bad, I was just wondering where to get a good one and about how much they cost? Thanks.
