I handle insurance claims and have a insured who purchased a gray market L1501 tractor. He had the tractor stolen. I spoke to a Kubota dealer and they told me that as far as the U.S. market a comparable tractor would be a L175. My insured told me his tractor was manufactured he belived in 1993. I see that the L175 was manufactured in 1973. I was trying to determine since the L1501 was comparable to the L175 would they have more than likely been manufactured in the same year. Or since the L1501 is gray market if it is possible it was manufactured in 1993. Which seems odd if the L175's parts are interchangable with the L1501.

What is a gray market tractor? I get the impression it is a copy of an earlier model by one of the major manufacters. I see a lot of adds for Farmtrac. Are they or any of the gray market tractors any good or as good as the original? (if I have the right idea of what the gray market is)

Grey market tractors are tractors that were not built for sale in the USA. For whatever reason they are used in the foreign country they were built for then "rebuilt" to sell in the USA. Kubota for one does not have dealer or parts support for grey tractors of theirs brought in to the USA.

Gray market tractors were designed for a different market and never meant to be in the USA. Some do not have necessary saftey options that other models have. Companies are not required to supply parts for gray market machines and most do not. The comparison of Farm Trac to Ford is not correct. Farm Trac is a division of Long. There are actual dealers in the USA for that brand. The gray market tractors are a problem for dealers when customers come in requesting parts for them. Most dealers do not have access to books, because they were meant for another part of the world.
All in all, stay away from gray market tractors.

An example would be a new 1973 ford 2000 or a new 2006 Farmtrac 535. Both new and basically the same tractor build 33 years apart.

Thack, your example is incorrect as both machines were built to US specs and therefore intended to be sold to the US market. Actually, Farmtrac merely bought the rights to the old Ford design.

The other definitions are correct: A tractor, usually of similar origin to "US" manufacturer models (JD=Yanmar, NH=Shibura, CC=Misubishi, MF=Iseki...) originally built for, sold to, and used in another country that is then cleaned up, imported, and sold within the US.

I would suggest going to www.kubota.com they have a section on the gray market models and see what you can find out.
