I have a young friend who is going to school learning to be an autobody repairman! I asked him if he would straiten 3 John Deere grille sections for me. Question= What would be a fair price to pay him for his work ? Thanks Minn. Norske

In the first place you said he was "going to school" so I assume he is learning on your grills also. Learning is not worth any where near what an experienced body/paint tech should get paid. You havn't a clue what they will turn out like, and the hours that he takes to do them may be three times what an expert would take.In my opinion, wait to see the finished grills and decide for yourself what it was worth to you according to how well they came out. If he's getting an education on your dollar then you call the shots in my opinion . Back in 1970 when I first started out, I would do the work for materials only, and if they were happy enough with the job to give me more then that was their call. These schools are fine but they teach the basics, what you are letting him do is "real world" and he aught to be happy someone is giving him the oportunity.I'm sure you can work it out between you but just remember the above. Also remember that unless he has a repair shop registration with the state he cannot legally charge you anything. A person needs to be carefull starting out doing work for others and trying to get paid. LOL.

Body shops are charging $40.00 an hour labor. The guys doing the work are maybe getting $15-$18 an hour ? Most stuff is done at a flat rate price. Hope you can work something out.

Maybe this will help..at the last tractor show JD grills were selling for a low of $60.00 up to $100.00 if complete. Now, it depends on how badly dented they are and if the inner "shutters" had to be removed to repair the grill. Best I can do for you on this. Jim

And just how does the selling price of the grilles enter in to this???

If the kid is hired to do the repairs, and is considered to have the needed skills to complete the work, and DOES the work, he deserves to get paid a reasonable amount for his time.

The value of the grilles is MEANINGLESS here.

No, I am sorry but the value of the grills is not meaningless. If the worker puts more time into them than they are worth he is not going to run a profitable business long and he needs to learn that too.
I would base what I gave him on exactly that regardless if he spent an hour or a week on them. And let him know beforehand what he was getting into.
