Hi Guys,

Felt kinda good to get that red rascal offloaded. 'Course, don't ya know that I then had play with all the knobs just to see if everything worked as it should.

But, Hey! Cut me some slack 'cause I been waitin' 23 years to do this again. :>)

Now, looks like I'd better get after that old wood box 'fore mother nature trys to reclaim it as her own. :>(

Hey Allan, I've got a deal for you. :-) I've got an auger for your truck, it goes on the side that is down when side-dumping, pulls all the grain to the center dump. It will empty that bed in about half the time it takes to empty it out the back. Had it on a GMC about the same as yours growing up when we had lots o' wheat...Dad was one of those guys like you, didn't seen the need for the newest, biggest, just what fit the operation best for the money. Anyway, that auger is sitting behind the shop, let me know if you are interested, we won't use it again.

Hi Chad,

Tryin' to visualize this in my mind. You're not talking about a drill-filling auger are you?

I'd kinda like to find one of those rather than use the scoop shovel. :>)

Nah, not a drill fill (Although I think I've got one of those too if you are interested), this goes down IN the bed, right along the corner that would be the lowest point when the bed is tilted on it's side, all the way from front to back. One side is left hand, other is right hand pitch, so both sides pull to the middle. A hydraulic motor sticks out through a notch cut in the front board to drive it. It pulls grain from the corners (front and back) to the middle, where the big chute usually is. I'll see if I can dig up a picture if that would help.

Hi Billy,

The box is made up of a series of "sissoring" crossbeams, which actually can be dumped either out the left side or to the right. You'll notice a couple of hooks to either side of the wheel openings. These were used via cables back in the days before the invent of hydraulics.

When the truck dumps rearward, the lower fore/aft stringers in addition to the crossbeams are lifted as a unit. When it tilts sideways, two different cylinders are mounted in such a way that only those sissoring crossbeams are activated.

Finally, two more cylinders are mounted horizontialy and at each end of the left sideboard and run that opener/closer linkage.

It's dark outside or I would send you a picture. Instead, I scanned this one for ya out of the manual.

After all the mending that needs to be done, I'll paint the sides and oil the floor with used engine oil.

That is unique, spent a lot of time in and or around trucks while trying to earn a degree and I can't I've seen anything like that, must be indigenous to the area for special use. That last photo explains it well, that body must have cost quite a bit when new. And I thought the lever on the back of mine was cool, you can dump with the wheels chocked, while you stand there, I can dump in our barn and watch out for the trusses above. Side dump, that would be handy for sawdust at my place.

I think I'm going to get some oil based paint, have to cross the state line to get it in gallon cans now, NY only allows it in Qts. I will prepare the surface, prime then paint, even the bed, something with a high gloss to make it slippery, should be enough to get me over the hump as the material I am going to haul with it hangs up a little, I'm not sure if I could re-mount the hoist cylinders a little further up, but it was designed for grain anyways.

Billy,

This box is really, really old. Probably somewhere around a 1955 to 1960 and they sold for something like $1500 when new plus all the hydraulics added later.

Sad part is that the prior owner told me that I had paid within $2K of the original price of the truck when he bought it new.

Of course I knew that I was paying twice what it was really worth by any stretch of the imagination, but I just had to have that old sis 'cause I know how handy they are. :>)

I always kind of like the side dump. Of course now the beet dumps all require full endgates and end dumps, so the old side dump trucks don't see much use in this part of the country.

I can't recall ever seeing one with that feature, how does the side dump work, spring loaded, hydraulics, magic ? LOL What are you going to use to protect the wood ? I've got a similar problem on mine, like you say before mother nature reclaims it's a good idea. I've found a few nice salvage jobs, a lot of buildings half fallen down around here with good materials to re-use, have one to take down soon, so it and a few other things might get a roof overhead this year.

Allen, What was so hard about unloading the taho off the back, I would have just used what ever lever you pulled in picture number 2, that would have gotten her right off of there :D. Nice truck. Does it have a big block or small block? We have a 72 C50 that has a 350, and that thing sure will wind up. Other than the body falling off and a cracked windshield and it not running right now, it was a great truck.

That is one slick set-up. We don't grow beets around here.....never seen one like that before. I like it! Would be great for my purposes just as a general purpose truck. Ours here are all steel grain boxes.

Allan, it is nice to see a man as dedicated as you to the preservation of farming with some equipment from the past to be rewarded with finding some really neat equipment and fair prices I suspect. Not every one sets his sights on something and don't leave it rest till it's done. Great example for the rest of us used to be's and our little dreams. Did you have a level of expenditures to put all this stuff together and how is it playing out in the end? Don't mean to be nosy but more curiosity as to how you are finding prices this go around. I would love to ride shotgun when you go past those old banks and creditors with your new toys on the way to the farm. Shucks I'd love to bring one of my relics and spend a day or two getting after it in the dirt. How far are you really from Lynden Wa anyway? Just a thought. Congrats on the new toys. Get em' greased and full of fuel. and get ready to rock and roll. Migraine

Hi Ol' Bud,

Heck, those old bankers and lenders are either retired or long gone out of business and I'm way past all that "mad" now. Besides, that kind of an approach just slows a feller down. :>)

Oddly enough, it is turning out that the cost of this little endeavor will have been just about the same total money as the wolves took at the farm sale back in '83. So personally, as well as financially, it is as though I just took a 23-year recess from the farming business so I could somehow get my head screwed on straight. :>(

Hard lesson learned however, always work on your own money and never, ever get the idea that farming pays. When I finally got this little bit of info figured out, then things started coming back my direction and I now use it to my advantage.

You bet! Come on out, we've got dirt to turn! :>)
